Challenge: Best of 2007 (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM
Location: Hvalfjörður, Iceland
Date: Feb 8, 2007
Aperture: 2.0
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 30 sec
Galleries: Landscape, Nature
Date Uploaded: Jan 14, 2008

This shot was taken the same night as my 2007-2 free study blue ribbon winner, just later that night right after midnight, closer to Hvalfjörður.

That night was probably the best night I have had so far taking nightscapes. Everything was pretty much perfect, had a slight moon lighting up the landscape but not enough to overpower the sky. Had great borealis, a little clouds but not enough to hide the stars and the lights from Reykjavík lighting up those clouds.

These two photos are absolutely my favorites from last year and this was also a strong contender for that feb free study and I had it in mind all last year for this study and although I think I took a lot of nice shots last year, this is my favorite of those I didn´t enter a challenge.

I love this site sometimes... A new ruleset comes along and suddenly people see HDR in images that are made from a single raw capture, like this one, and complain about that, even though that´s legal to do now according to the rules?

Anyone who has ever taken a photo at night should know that these scenes are LOW dynamic range if anything and extremely flat contrast wise so to correct that problem I put a seperate curves adjustment on the sky and the ground, if not for that this image could have been edited in the basic editing rules.

Oh and too many stars? Sorry about that, I simply forgot to call God and ask him to turn off half of them for me :)

Very surreal. I prefer your FS entry over this one, but they are both special. Congrats on a great year of shooting!

those people that voted this 4 and below, i'll personally start a posse to find them and rough them up a bit. there's no way this should be voted any lower than a 6, and to me that's a stretch...but of course that's just opinion, and the others that voted lower have their valid reasons as well i suppose.

all in all, great shot buddy. you had at least 50 shots this year that any pick would have ended up in the top 10, no doubt and i believe this is definitely one of them. keep up the great work

This has to be from one of my favorite photographers, Mr. L.....! Another fine example of capturing the northern lights and starry skies of Iceland.
Sure to be a top 10 contender! Congratulations!

For some reason the stars look like glitter to me. They don't look real. Otherwise, very nice shot.

Well, I don't know how to compete with photos like this. Incredible. The only thing that would make it better (IMO) would be the elimination of the power lines.

Beautiful shot, but somehow, IMHO, the mass of stars distract. (6)

Well I think its a glow from a nearby city. Anyway its an amazing shot Lalli, and your trademark stars are exceptionally clear. Nice colors but a little soft in the corners.

This photo is encouraging me to make mountains out of my mashed potatoes. (If that makes no sense, then rent "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"!)

damn yet another of those shots. I wish I could say I'm getting bored. But this is excellent. And the sunrise/borealis contrast give it a great color twist. And great stars.

I would of said 10, but then realised that I had to dock 5 points to negate your unfair location advantage. ;)

Great shot, the colours in the sky and reflected on the snow are fantastic. The broken up snow on the mountain gives a great texture too.

love the stars but I think the northern lights ruined your sunset:)

Incredible shot, from the stars to the colors from white, to green, to redish orange it all works. I guess my only beef would be those pesky power lines from the left to right. Other than that, its flawless. Nice work.

I look forward to reading about how after the challenge is over. The effect, in the meantime, is worthy of a 9. Fascinating to observe and worth waiting for.
