A Romany gypsy lady who sells the Big Issue magazine in Manchester, UK. The Big Issue is a magazine bought by homeless and people a bit down on their luck for 60p and then sold to the general public for £1.50. The sellers keep the profits from the sales.

The title is the Romany name for themselves, a tribal name name I think. I don't actually know this lady's name so i'm going to call her Rose... or Steve.

I've seen this lady pretty much every day for a couple of months (she sells near my work) and have always loved her eyes, it's as if she has so much to tell us, and understands so much about life just in the way she looks at you when you walk past. She doesn't speak much (English isn't her native tongue) but she a great voice and was happy enough for me to take her picture.

Here she is.

If you like this picture, please buy a copy of the Big Issue from your local seller and support a worthy cause.

I desaturated the background to make the image pop a bit more than it otherwise would have. I had a bit of trouble with the final sharpening but I think it cracked it and kept it to a sensible level.

Overall, I'm very proud of this image and I think it's one of my best. If it doesn't get above a 6.5 i'll be quite disappointed, but as seems par for the course as of late, it'll teeter on 5.9 and 6 and then just decide to stay at 5.8.

Taken from a single jpeg, cropped, sharpened, USMed twice, high pass on soft light, color balance, selective color, levels, curves, levels, curves, color curves, and plenty of other stuff that involved me noodling around.

Anyways, I do hope you like it and it at least gives you enjoyment and ideas.

I find that the orange yellow mass in the lower left is very distracting and really detracts from an otherwise dramatic portrait with great eyes. Would score this an 8 if this was cloned out or at least definable with a different crop - 6

Nice color in the eyes, and character on her face.
