Challenge: Architecture IV (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Peleng 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye MC In M42 Mount
Location: Canterbury Cathedral
Date: Jan 29, 2008
Aperture: F/8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 5"

Date Uploaded: Jan 29, 2008

This was taken in a rush this morning, I had about 10 minutes in the cathedral before I had to head to my lecture. I think it would have been better with a person in the shot.
The biggest technical problem was to get the Manfrotto 808 RC4's handles out of the shot, and seeing what I was doing as the tripod was on minimum height and the camera pointing more or less right up. Go LiveView! The priests and guides there are quite cool about someone sitting in the middle of the choir though, I got very friendly reactions every time I've been there so far.

LOVELY SHOT. Well deserved. Sounds like you have some positive camera-friendly people at the Cathedral. I tried in Durham Cathedral, only to have about four people in clerical-type gowns converge on me, and tell me it would disturb 'the worshippers'. I wouldn't have minded, but I could only see one, about 100yards away! I pointed this out, only to be told 'the noise'. (I had taken about 4 without them hearing anything). I asked if they allowed Photography, only to be informed that if I paid £10, I could photograph immediately! I feel the worshippers are getting a raw deal, as I am sure they would not get a penny of the £10. I think next time, I will just hang the camera over my chest, and use the remote to fire it without anyone being the wiser. Don't contact them - they will probably ban photography per se. What really got me riled was I came about 12 Years ago with a photo group, and we took hundreds of shots with no trouble - and there were more worshippers then. Makes you wonder if it's money those in charge worship! I just may visit Canterbury myself....

In the challenge, this one was my favorite. The wide angle and many facets give this cathedral a jewel effect. Well done and many congrats on your ribbon!!!

Nice colors and I like the distortion - makes the shot feel like a kaleidoscope (or however you spell that! : ). Back to bump you up to 8.

Beautiful subject. I like your choice of lens and the perspective from which you took the photo. I may be wrong but it feels like an experiment in HDR that's gone a bit too far.
