Challenge: Free Study 2008-01 (Advanced Editing VI ("Time Lapse"))
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM
Location: Bláfjöll, Iceland
Date: Jan 6, 2008
Aperture: 2.0
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 20 sec
Galleries: Sky, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Jan 30, 2008

I actually forgot about this challenge and this is a placeholder I submited a while ago, way before rollover, I have been doing that for the free studies and this is the second time that has "saved my ass" from not having an entry.

This shot was taken during a short trip me and Indriði took up in Bláfjöll. The weather was a bit wierd that night, a couple of times it started to snow all of a sudden for a short while so we couldn´t see very far and then it stopped and the sky cleared. Also the wind was pretty strong so the motion of the clouds was dramatic.

As with all my night shots the processing is really not that much but I still darken the sky and brigthen the foreground double exposing a single raw file, contrast, WB and saturation adjustments in C1 and that´s pretty much it.

Oh and for petes sake, for those of you who go "same old same old" or "I am tired of these borealis shots", feel free to vote these images down if you like, feel free! :) Don´t expect me to care though what you think as I am shooting these images for me and I do like them and have a great time shooting them. If you think I am shooting these in hopes of ribboning here you are sadly mistaken, I have plenty of those already and don´t really care if I get any more or not.

Don´t forget that there is a world outside of DPC and consider that I might actually be shooting these to be able to use them later in some project like photo exhibitions, postcards and possibly a book sometime in the future.

As for using them in free studies, I don´t really have a lot of choice as this is pretty much the only thing I am shooting for myself these days, that and portait series like the superhero series or Symbols and this month, this was my favorite shot.

Thx for the ribbon, even though I say I really don´t care much about them anymore I would be lying if I didn´t say that they are always appreciated and fun to get, especially when you don´t expect them, I didn´t think 7.13 would be enough :)

Larus,
Please don't listen to the whiners!
You just keep on taking these "same 'ol shots"!! I love them!
I just hope that I ever get lucky enough to visit your stunning country!
This goes right into my favorites.
Thanks for braving the cold too.
By the way, how do you keep the camera functioning in that temperature?

What I need help understanding is the stars. There seems to be a polygonal pattern to the stars in some places and I don't understand how so many stars are visable in the aurora borealis. How did you do this?

Beautiful, but I was under the impression the photo had to be taken with a time-slot for the challenge. I have 50.000 photos and I never enter if I don't shoot a fresh new one as they can see the properties...I feel I am still on the outside looking in.

Isn't it cold in Iceland? Then why do the people have skin so thin that unless you fawn over a photograph, they have to reply for the 100th time that "I really don't care."? Doesn't criticism help build a person? I love this site, the photographers (including Larus) found here have some incredible talent, my fav bar none is DrAchoo. Yet everytime somebody posts anything other than incredible, fantastic, wow, etc... others have to run to the rescue of the fallen photographer. For the love of everything Holy, they sound like a little league mother protecting their talentless kid. So send the hate mail, but please let free speech run rampant.
respond with a post or a you can reach me at

ps if you want to include a photograph, anything with cleavage will be much appreciated and of course read first. hee hee

Larus, I think this may be my favorite of all your northern lights shots. I really like the way the road is offset by the large green area. Provides an interesting balance. I saw your post above about possibly putting them together for an exhibition and/or book. A grand idea.

Didn't get to this one during voting, but it is amazing, as are all the shots I see on DPC of the Aurora Borealis, especially yours. I really like that dead straight line you've included in this and the way the aurora is fanning across that incredible starry night sky. Thank you for sharing these images and good to hear you never tire of them. An image of this is one thing but to see this in person, especially the first time, must be literally breathtaking. In imagining being there, I wonder --- just how cold is it out there in the middle of the night?

Would be interesting to see this image on a full size basis. The ISO and aperture you used are fairly extreme. It must have been a rather dark night.

Well, Larus, you didn't get any "1s" on this one, and if this was the placeholder, well what might have been would be even more fantastic.

You folks have so many natural wonders in that fabulous land of yours, that if you ever entered examples of them all, you'd be on the front page every week and tourists would be flocking to Iceland.
The lava flows, the waterfalls, the geysers, glaciers, calderas, and on and on, let alone the light shows you present, like this one.

Keep 'em coming.

Incredible as always Larus, perfect composition and color. I have to be honest though that your post comment just isn't necessary, as you know everyone has an opinion and are more jealous than anything, there is no reason to even acknowledge these ones IMO. We already know how good your work is and that you shoot for yourself and not DPC. Your placement speaks for itself how the majority of the people here feel about your shot, so to go off and acknowledge these ones, just doesn't give this type of shot the credit or justice it deserves.

Besides we all know that opinions are like Arseholes, everyone has one, and they all STINK!!

Congrats on the Ribb brotha!!
