Challenge: Reflections Without Mirrors IV (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D

This is a direct rip off of this image by Larus. I paid attention to his POW project last year, and when this when came up I knew at some point I wanted to something similar. Not necessarily for a challenge but just for myself. This week it worked out that I could do it for a challenge.

Driving to drop off some movies I noticed the roadway at a local cemetary having alot of puddles. It wasn't raining at the time so I took Aidan over and we took a bunch of shots at different puddles. This was bit more challenging than I had expected. Finding the right puddle, the right angle, the right background after finding the right angle - it was a challenge. This shot was one of the last 3 or 4 images I took at the last puddle we stopped at. This was the right puddle - good size that allowed me to have his upper body int he shot, the right background - no grass or other distractions, and the right pavement for the most part - good detail and some cool cracks. This is no where near as cool as Larus' shot but I think I did pretty well with it. We sure had fun shooting it.

I have no clue how this will score. Its not a seascape so I doubt I can get real high, it is a blatant rip off but I don't know how many voters will have seen this in Larus portfolio. His image has only just over 700 views and I am sure that easily 75 or so are me. I would love to see this place high against the seascapes I expect. Fingers crossed.

Post process - raw conversion, contrast mask a couple of times, high pass sharpen, NI a couple of times, multiple hue/sat adjustments, multiple selective color adjustments, guassian blur, gradient layer for vignette, dodging and burning galore, selective blur and sharpen, resize, and then more of pretty much everything above after resize (which is a shame because I dont have a large copy now to print proper), border and save.

A couple of people have recognized it as a Larus take off. Others have found it highly original. Very very pleased with its scoring so far. I am beginning to have high hopes that I may be able to ribbon against those stellar seascapes. A yellow ribbon would be nice as I am still missing that color. Lets see what the rest of the week brings.
--------------------------------------
Post Challenge - I am glad to see this score high and ribbon. I know have pics of both of my kids in my top rated entries.

And for anyone who has a problem with me using someone else's idea - get over it. First off this is DPC. We all use other peoples ideas. Thats part of the game here. And beyond that, years from now when DPC is a distant memory for me, this image will still be hanging on my wall. I am greatful for Larus putting his image in his portfolio and showing me a brilliant idea. And I am glad I was able to create a similar image, not just for the little virtual ribbon, but for my enjoyment in my home. If you have a problem with people using other people's ideas then you must be one heck of a creative and unique individual.

Well-deserved blue - I didn't have time to vote on this challenge, but you would have got a 10 from me too if I had. Don't worry about being "derivative" - you made this absolutely your own.

I think it is awesome of course, but that puts me in amongst the highest percentile, I am sure.

First off... my first reaction upon seeing this is that I couldn't wait to do it with my grandaughters, and then I thought it was great that you mentioned that it was a 'blatant rip-off' of Larus's work, even though it was not necessary to mention that at all. It gave you tons of credibility in my book.

Congratulations on the capture of the ribbon... but as you said, it's on your wall either way.

Cute little guy. He deserves a Pizza Party!!!!

Hey Tim, way to go! Congrats on the ribbon and glad to have inspired you :)

For those of you who are nagging about him "stealing" the idea, get over it! It´s hardly like I invented this type of shot, it´s been done before and I got the idea from a b/w magazine I read a couple of years ago wich had legs in the top part of the photo, cropped off and the face visible in a puddle but didn´t resemble my or Tim´s shot in any other way. Tim took the shot and did it his own way and was far from copying my shot so why should it matter where he got the basic idea from, wether that was from DPC or some other source, does that really matter? I think some people need to realize that there is a whole world of photography outside of DPC.

Thx for the credit Tim and congrats once again :)

Neat execution and well presented. Making the inevitable Larus comparison, his retains the menace that the original idea communicates with his adult model, yours has a different message for me. Regarding using other people's ideas as inspiration, whether directly or indirectly, there is hardly anything wrong or new about that, and I'm frankly suprised it has to be mentioned at all, particularly when you openly acknowledge the original and even use a colloquialism to describe your use. I know that I have many photographs in my portfolio here and in my personal collection that is rich with inspiration from others' work. In my view it's something for all parties to be proud of.

Nicely done Tim! Unfortunate about having to explain yourself. We all get our inspiration from a variety of sources but the hard part is being able to pull it off in a convincing and professional manner. You performed admirably! You paid homage to Larus and said so... and I'm sure he's thrilled. I would be. Remember... In a room full of balloons, there's always going to be a prick or two. :)

Oh yes! This is a GOOOD ONE!! Very artful and creative! And you are RIGHT! Every photograph for all time has "been there done that" before -- but each new rendition of any photo has the touch of the new master! This one is very special. Most definitely a 10 by ANY standard!

Congrats on a great shot. No problem with shooting your own take on a fine composition. Its no different than a musician covering a classic song. You took the idea and as they say. "made it your own"

Tim, congrats on the fantastic finish and wonderful shot! And I agree with you 100% about the duplication of someone else's shot. For one, the great shots are not easy to copy anyway, and take real skill to execute. Second, trying to duplicate a shot forces you to try over and over to get it right, and usually that means you learn something new while doing it. Well done, Tim, and hang it on your wall with pride!

Congratulations Timfy! :) Really like your take.
Glad this did so well. I remembered the similar shot but couldn't put my finger on who's it was, Saberi came to mind, but I was this close to checking out Larus. I should've known since I was following his PAW, doh. I didnt finish my round of bumps but this would've made it. I like how well the title fits the shot and with those clever accents ;)

I think this image is unique in that it deviates from the classic landscape reflected in water theme. Additionally I feel that the title "Disconnect" is appropriate because the emotion of the boy's face differs from the emotion of his body language. The boy's face seems intensely serious while his body, with the feet rocked back slightly on the heels, emits anxiousness.

Fantastic. Very artistic approach. You have really composed this shot extremely well. The grey road adds great contrast to the saturated blue and red.You deserve to do well with this. One of the most original shots I've seen in a while. 10

Woo-hooo... excellent! So full of meaning - exactly what I wish we had more of at DPC. Exceptional idea with the diagonal orientation. Only thing I can fault it for is that the color is a bit distracting - would have made a killer B&W.
