Definitely a standout. Very nice panning and the expression really sells the photo.

Congratulations on the ribbon. I was one of the ones that pointed out the staged look and what caught my eye wasn't so much the subject looking at the camera or looking different from the background. It was a few things for me... The ground of the foreground doesn't seem to match the ground of the background; Blur lines suddenly stop on the ground of the foreground; There is a clean border like break between foreground and background; And the curve of the line between foreground and background doesn't seem to match the blur lines in the background.

I was actually shocked that more people didn't point these things out, but I'm just a beginner, so I'll defer to the experts around here. I suppose the foreground is a cross street/walk that is just suddenly buttery smooth and the subtle lines at the very bottom help to see that slightly. Too bad there wasn't just an irregularity or two in that foreground to show more clear motion (although it must be great to ride on).

It really is an effective shot either way. Given that it's unstaged, it's good enough to have fooled some of us into thinking it might be staged. It's almost too bad it's not staged, because then you could say you made a shot good enough to fool a whole bunch of fantastic photographers.

Thanks for the fun misadventure in photo sleuthing.

Wow! Thanks for all the wonderful feedback and comments! I am so new to all of this that I am still trying to work out where and when I can comment :)

It was killing me not being able to respond to the comments as they were coming in during the voting, but we all had a good laugh here at home as this is a shot of my son, and not of a girl as many (rightfully) assumed! I keep telling him, "boy, they must all just think you're a pretty homely girl!" and yet he still refuses to get his hair cut.

Anyway, fantastic to have a ribbon, but more fantastic to get all of the great support - thanks guys! I wanted to be able to post the original (unedited) shot here, but I don't see where I would uploaded it.

This was taken as is was getting dark and my shutter speed was way lower than it was suppose to be for the conditions from everything that I had read about panning and yet somehow I managed to pull it off. I wasn't sure if the comments that were referring to it looking staged was because of him looking at me or because of the background and subject looking different.

For anyone interested, when I saw the theme was "Panning" I had no idea what that was, so I started searching the web and came up with this: //digital-photography-school.com/blog/mastering-panning-to-photograph-moving-subjects/

Check out J Catlett's work - stunning.

Best shot in the challenge! I love the expression and the background is framed and blurred nicely. Good job and nice finish.

My top pick for the challenge. I really like the eye contact and great motion. The slight color cast and lack of shadow detail are the only nits keeping me from giving a 10. Great job!

This photograph displays beautiful panning with the scooter and the rider being so crisp and clear and the background qutie blurry. There is aslo a great senes of balance with the lighter solid ground and the darker parts of the top on this photograph.

Awesome focus on the kid, but for some reason it looks kind of staged to me.

Great converging lines really pulling my eye through the picture. The lower line behind the razor is very strange. Honestly, it makes it look like she is posing in front of a blurred backdrop to me.

Superb shot - my favourite of the lot. Original and fun, and technically well executed. Would have preferred it a touch brighter as it feels a shade or two underexposed, or maybe just a bit blue...but nevertheless it's still a brilliant shot.

My initial reaction was something didn't look right in this photo. The background seems to be moving up/down not side-to-side. Also the ground is in focus which looks unnatural

Sweet, and well done, wish I could see detail in her legs, but yeah, I know, basic editing.
