This is Squeak. We've had her for two years now and she's still very feral. You can't just approach her for something like a photo shoot without her running away although I tried many times. I captured this shot while she was underneath our living room table. Setup was simple. I stuck a flash under the table and faced it up so it would bounce off the table. Naturally I used my 70-200mm lens which gave me good reach while staying as far away from her as possible so she wouldn't run.

Outtake:

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Given the .1 drop this had on the final day I'm surprised it still finished 2nd. I was expecting a lot of other images to have done better so it turns out I was pretty lucky.

Richard, I'm thrilled that the cats were so well-represented by this stunning entry. (I was worried the dogs would have dominated the front page). I have to say though, "18 Years" is still my favorite!...;-)

another portrait of that 18 year old from last year! which was so well done
and also took a nice red ribbon.

8 - I deliberated over this at first, it is good, but my first thoughts were that the eyes were overprocessed to the point that they didn't look natural, that coupled with the few similar images I've seen on DPC, although that really doesn't matter. There is something slightly unnatural in the eyes, but could be that this is shot in a studio, not sure, but - other than perhaps a suggestion of the lighting at the top similar to that as what appears to be at the bottom, this is a very good image and a very nice pet portrait, and yes, shows off the 'plain old tabby cat''s features well.
