The title is a double entendre....for those of us less inclined to understanding the nuances of our language.

Thank you to those who have taken the time to try to appreciate my intentional decisions while making this piece. Everything from the lighting, to the lens, to the pose, to the focus and editing led to this end result.

This is my pup...about 7 months....he is a total humane society pickup...and no one has any idea what he is. Not even my vet. Anyone want to venture what different breeds may have contributed to this crazy guy?

Here is a profile of him yawning...I mean growling:

And then posing...

haha so cute!

Look at the eyes on that guy. His demeanour looks almost regal and I sense some Papillon? How big is he?

Whatever he is, he is a miracle of a dog, a combination that would be great to figure out and breed specifically. Humane Society pups really are the best, aren't they?

Wonderful portrait and I wish I had been able to vote. Should have scored higher but that often happens...

"Anyone want to venture what different breeds may have contributed to this crazy guy?"

- at first he looked a little like another dog I had viewed in this Challenge, an 'Icelandic Sheep Dog', by djonson: ....I'd never heard of an Icelandic Sheep Dog, but then there was another, by unneva:

Otherwise, a few 'guesses' might be perhaps a corgi/fox terrier mix (especially because of those big ears), it is a little difficult to guage his size from the image, but perhaps a papillon was involved, long-haired chihuahua, who knows. One thing is for sure, this is a lovely looking dog with a cute face and a 'fine set of ears' now captured in a fine photograph. Best of all, he now has a home.

I really like this one too. He looks so soft and fluffy. It makes me want a dog. Oh yeh and your photography was amazing also :)

There's always unfair results around... Shots like this should be at first places instead of these creating the poor front page of this week.
03/03/2008 08:21:43 AM
Yup, one of the best. Should have ribboned. Beautiful photo.

03/03/2008 08:11:35 AM
Just adored this one. Got one of my highest scores. FAB
03/03/2008 02:30:03 AM
This would have been my number one, had I been able to vote (need to fork out one of these days). Fantastic!
03/03/2008 01:17:24 AM
This is a great shot. How do we train people to understand that there's nothing wrong with this shot? Rules, rules, rules...
03/03/2008 12:33:58 AM
This has a lot of weight. Serious portraiture and serious art.
03/03/2008 12:25:22 AM
I picked this as the one to beat.
03/03/2008 12:17:54 AM
This was my fave.
Gave you a 10!
Great shot, you really captured a fabulous photograph here.
03/03/2008 12:06:24 AM
This is a REALLY cute shot, and looks to me like this should have been on the front page. Very nice work :)
03/03/2008 12:05:53 AM
19th? This was my favorite in the challenge.

The amazing texture detail competing with the soft focus, along with the b&w conversion, make this an amazing pet portrait. Nice. 9 Later 10

Most splendid. Love the toning here. The lighting works really well, only really minor nitpick is his/her right side is a tad too dark. Still like this a whole lot, top5 fave!
03/02/2008 10:21:02 PM
Loove the lighting, the focus, the greyscale, he composition, the background, the ears, and the dogs facial expression. 10
good luck

That deadpan look just cracks me up - very nice. :)
03/02/2008 05:35:39 AM
Amazing lighting and great clarity to boot. Good stuff.
03/02/2008 03:56:37 AM
Oh my what a carachter! It looks like a portrait of a very serious politician. Very well done :)
02/29/2008 02:33:30 PM
That's wonderful. Love the play of light and shadow. Great ears. Papillon mix? I keep coming back to this guy. What a charmer. Upping the score too. ;~)
02/28/2008 08:37:50 PM
Great capture and expression...wish it was in colour and shadows weren't so dark on the right half. Good Luck.
02/28/2008 07:51:15 PM
Haha, definitely has the "are you done yet?" stare. I like the lighting other than the left eye is too dark. Nice saturation and clarity. The soft edge around the frame is nice too.
02/28/2008 08:35:17 AM
For some reason, this reminds me very much of the actor Jack Nicholson.
02/27/2008 05:15:33 PM
Love the attention you captured in the ears. Shadows on the left are just slightly too much. They just barely cross the line between adding interest and distracting from the effect.
02/26/2008 10:30:01 PM
Love those ears! S/he looks awfully serious, I must say. Could use a bit of fill light or dodging on the shadowed eye; just too cute a dog for film noir (bete noir?) lighting.
02/26/2008 03:25:00 PM
ribbon ribbon ribbon........... 10 well done
02/26/2008 08:29:54 AM
Exquisite! A fave! 9
02/25/2008 10:34:48 PM
I think it would improve if the right eye was a bit more visible.
02/25/2008 10:26:17 PM
Lovely
02/25/2008 08:50:11 PM
Feels very much like a studio portrait. Exceptional!
02/25/2008 06:23:07 PM
Nice looking dog, and the lighting here is very good. The left side of the photo is dark, maybe some dodging or burning would be better for it.
02/25/2008 03:41:12 PM
Beautiful!
02/25/2008 02:24:51 PM
Nice pose and like the centered composition works well - but do wonder about a little more 'depth', dramatic tones to make 'The Sitter' pop a little more. Lighting is nice, but again - wish the right eye had the same or similar illumination.
02/25/2008 08:39:51 AM
great capture of personality in this face; I like the soft lighting
02/25/2008 02:00:31 AM
lovely but I would have liked just a little more light on his r side of his face, maybe burned it in?
02/25/2008 01:01:18 AM
That's awesome.
02/25/2008 12:25:10 AM
Very well done!

It would be nice to see a write up on your lighting setup and studio setup for this shot.
02/25/2008 12:16:51 AM
great lighting and a nice b and w...8
