Challenge: Peek-a-Boo (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: 2008
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II
Location: Fort Worth, Texas
Date: Mar 8, 2008
Aperture: F 5.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/200
Galleries: Family, Children
Date Uploaded: Mar 9, 2008

My 8 year old granddaughter peeping through some openings in a brick wall. I really like the slightly disorienting look, from her face being sideways and only partially exposed.

Good thing this was advanced editing and I had a RAW to work from. My fill flash washed out the lower part of the bricks more than it lit the face behind them. In JPEG, I don't think I could have pulled this much detail out of it. I used a lot of area selections in order to adjust the different sections independently, But I think it all pulled together.

-Import RAW into Paint Shop Pro
-Selected lower part of brickwork and adjust curves to match with upper half
-selected inner part and adjusted curves to bring out detail
-Clarify
-Fussed for several hours over exactly how to crop it.
-Border
-Resize
-sharpen

Pre-challenge notes:
I won't even hazard a guess at how this will do. Votes on my entries have been all over the place of late, so something in the 4's won't surprise me (A high 5 would be nice, though). I really like this, but the view may be a little too odd to hit the "broad appeal" target.

Post-challenge notes:
Well, I was wrong again! This one came in better than I had hoped. I need to go edit the goals on my profile page, as this one knocks the last 5 off of it. Can I play with the big boys now?

Somehow I missed this challenge entirely, and this shot. Excellent composition - the eye, the hand, the knee - all backed by that gorgeous hair. And gotta say she looks older than 8. They grow up entirely too fast these days, don't they?

Ahhh...the DPChallenge bug has bitten you big time, eh? :-D Amazing how much time can get sucked up into post-processing isn't it? Myself included at times.

Hopefully your crop left you enough image for a decent size print of this. :-) A keeper for sure! Your extra time spent paid off nicely.

Congrats on needing to edit your profile page!!!

Nice picture. She doesn't have that look of peeking out with curiosity. She looks posed and waiting for a shutter sound. Still a 7 though.

Nice framing of the subject. Lighting feels a little unbalanced with harsh light on the wall and rather murky looking subject.

Lighting looks kind of harsh maybe I would like this better if it was darker almost like she was scared.

I like this shot. Could've done without the hair holders around the wrist.

I love the composition here! The complementary colors of her face & the brick work nicely. That little chunk of mortar hanging just in the corner of her eye emphasing only one eye visible, but it gives me a feeling of impending doom. ("be careful, don't poke your eye out"). But maybe that's just my dark side influencing me.

Nice composition. Keeps the viewer guessing as to what is going on. Will we ever see the whole of the girl's face? Nice...

Good work. The small point of mortar right at the corner of the eyes is a bit distracting. Minor detail... Very good peek-a-boo.
