Challenge: Environmental Portrait II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
Location: Omega Artisan Bakery - North Market - Columbus OH
Date: Mar 14, 2008
Date Uploaded: Mar 14, 2008

This is Amy Lozier - proprietor of Omega Artisan Bakery located in the North Market in downtown Columbus. They make the best hearty old style bread in town IMHO. Crunchy crust, earthy flavors, just top notch work all around.

When this challenge came up I was yearning to shoot a chef in a litchen, but I dont really know anyone here in Columbus. Had I been back in TUlsa I would have had to take my pick, but here I am in the dark. We go to the North Market every couple of weeks for cheese, turkey necks, specialty fish and of course - bread. The kalamata baguettes are Aimees favorite and they only have them on Saturdays after noon. I had never met Amy other then her ringing up our order a time or two. I got up the guts to cold call her and tell her about the challenge and ask her if she was willing to pose for me. She accepted and we made an appointment for the next day. I dropped my kids off at a friends house and went down to shoot.

We talked for a good thirty minutes before actually taking any pics. I am from a culinary background and it was fun to talk shop. I then shot a bunch of pics of her, her staff and her product. Bought some bread, said thank you very much and went my way. I had several choices to make as far as entries go, but I felt that this one of them all met the challenge the best. Would have preferred advanced editing but I always do.

Pretty straightforward editing - RAW conversion, shadow/highlight tweak, selective color adjusment, levels adjustment, hue/sat adjustment, NI, resize, USM and add border.

And now on day 6 of the vote I am sitting her with my stats -

Very pleased with these numbers. Been bouncing from 6.65 to 6.85 through out the week. While not a WOW type image I think it just overall meets the challenge well where many of the images in the challenge may have been a bit too far out of the box. I was hoping for above 6 but didnt expect to be in this range.

Hey, Congratulations, Tim! This photo has so much soul! I think it prob'ly is better than a chef picture would be. I am ALWAYS trying to get my chefs at the Culinary Institute of America here and their kitchen in a challenge -- but in their busy, messy, industrial kitchens, it has never quite worked out dpc-worthy enough. I think this is awesome!

Nicely captured. With all the tans and browns you could have run into color issues, but everything works well. Little squint in your subject's eyes.

There is a lot of the subjects environment in this shot which makes it very good for this challenge. How crystal clear it is makes it very nice good work

This is a nice picture, although there is a lot going on. The composition is well done, positioning the subject off center to her craft. I think some cropping might help this out though, maybe by losing the right side of the shot where you see part of a stand full of bread. The other part that distracts me is the background, particularly what looks like the kitchen area in the back. A shallower depth of field might help this out, or possibly just having the subject standing in front of a stand, shelf, or wall full of bread that would fill the background (but that might not be possible with the stores set up)...5

I like that the photo offers a great to look at and appreciate. On the other hand, I think that the placement of the model in the photo just isn't quite right as my eyes are automatically drawn to the big stacks of break in the middle/right. Almost feels like I'm looking at bread standing beside a person almost. 6

Excellent job - good shot - composition, exposure, lighting - all very well done. This fits the challenge perfectly, unlike many of the entries in this challenge. I hope you get a ribbon for this.

oh my! I'm not good at picking out ribbon shots, but this one has got to be top 10. Perfect take on the theme, perfect angle to collect all the interesting surroundings. You can tell she loves her job and is proud of her environment. Kudos! 8

With the baker so small in the frame and with her shoulder cut off she seems like an afterthought. Also the frame is fairly busy, may have been better without the bread on the table.
