Updated 9/12/08:

Dorothy passed away on 7/19/08, ending their 68 year marriage, just 4 days after Pete's 99th birthday (about 4 months after this shot was taken). Pete is still going strong and sharp as ever but completely heartbroken after losing his sweetheart. They first met 85 years ago in 1923. They defined what love and marriage are all about.

This was likely the last shot of them together.

A fitting end to an 85 year love story...

Pete passed away on 9/10/08, less than 2 months after Dorothy. He was as healthy as can be when she died. He spent the next month and a half getting all of their affairs in order, passing on prized possessions to family members and "wrapping up" all the details of their lives. He then got pneumonia and his 99 year old body that had been so healthy just couldn't hold up.

I think he was just heartbroken, missed the love of his life and his body decided it best if they were together.

My grandparents died within in months of each other - at ages 93 and 97. I completely agree with your assessment that he simply decided to move on and join her again wherever she was.

I love that they are such a beacon of hope for marriage these days. My parents, and grandparents have both stayed together and I am very lucky. It must be amazing to be with someone for so long, how great!! Praise God!!!

That is a BEAUTIFUL shot of special people. I'm sorry to hear of her death, but that makes the image an even more important tribute. It's amazing they were married for 68 years when he was 31 at their wedding! I can only hope my marriage lasts as long. :)

I like the lighting on this. As an entry I think the composition is OK, but I think I'd also make a print with a tighter (head and shoulders) crop.

The message is strong, but the composition doesn't do it justice. The angled frame with the corner behind the man's head and the plant between his legs (hiding the cast?) are very distracting. Perhaps if the couple was centered underneath the picture frame, the position were swapped so that the cast was behind his wife, and the plant was either removed or well off to one side the image would have been stronger.

green vegetables distract me; it would be much better if they where holding hands

oh! I want to be a lovebird for 68 years! What a beautiful portrait of love. The softness of the image makes it glow. It's just sharp enough. Well done.

Great pic that plant is a slight distraction.

The picture in the background distracts from the lovebirds. Too bad because it otherwise a wonderful picture. 8

Lovely portrait and very quaint depiction. Think I would've liked it even more than I do if it weren't so exposed and the light coming from the left were more of a feature.

This really is like watching a grand finale, I'm 104 of 117 into the challenge and the last 5 or 6 shots just keep gettign better and better. This is so well done, her lean into her, his keen stare, the arms, the hands, fabulous! Not sure if it will do well with the DPC crowd, but I love it. 7.

I love this one. A couple of suggestions, the painting on top diverts my attention; the plant also. Maybe posed in a more plain environment in portrait mode would be better. Good for them!

Plant seems distracting to me, interferes with his hand that could have been a point of interest. Nice softness in the background. I little red-eye, but can't remember right now if that is correctable under the Rules, so just an observation. A treasure.
