I really owe this shot to Philipdyer, he's the one who decided to turn the car around to check out Lombard Street; he's the one who decided to pull over to take pictures; he's the one who convinced me to take my camera out even after i repeatedly said that i wasn't inspired by this windy street. Then we had to bolt back to his place to edit the photo and submit it. The deadline was roughly 1 hour after i shot this.

As soon as i saw this scene i knew the fisheye was necessary, so i ran back to get it, and then waited for the lighting to be just right. This was taken in the perfect 10 minute time frame during which the sky and the scene were at roughly the same brightness.

great picture
04/09/2008 11:19:59 PM
Well done! I like the even lighting of sky and street, and the perspective. Makes me want to buy a fisheye, real bad though!

Very nice indeed, my word! - Nice!

Glad you went back for the lens.

You are in a different country, but I hope I would have gone back for it - I love the way the lights have reflected off the road - was it wet at all, or just a bit shiny?

I will go view your portfolio, if this is a sample of your work - I am sure I will learn something

Keep going, and lots more success!

Aleks, I wasn't a real fan of fisheye lenses until you had me take a look through this one. My response was "WOW what a lens"! The first thing that came to mind for me was... "Man he's going to use that at Lombard Street later and get a great picture". I was partially wrong as it's a fantastic~award winning photograph! Way to go! We all had a great time at the SF GTG. I'm looking forward to your next visit to the SF Bay area as I'll be more than happy to show you around some of the places you didn't get to this time. I'll be learning all the while! What a fine set of lenses you have in your bag of tricks, made all the better by your ability to use them effectively!

Aleks taking another shot from the "Far Side" with that lens!

and from Aleks' point of view...
from his point of view.

Way to go, Aleks! This is just fantastic. Never before have I seen this street interpreted this well. This is a prize winner in more ways than one. And most likely, it's extremely marketable as well. DO something with it!

I was at that street in November. I of course took a few shots and I have seen a number on the internet, in movies (e.g. The Hulk) so its certainly a well photographed subject. Your take however is quite unique and I can't recall seeing anything like this shot. The fish eye lens adds to the feeling of curviness (for lack of a better word) and really suits this shot well.

Excellent picture with the time exposure and great lighting. This is the place I was thinking of for this challenge, but I was thinking of the standard picture from the top or bottom of the block. The fisheye in the middle is great. Of course I couldn't go the 500 miles to get the picture. Congrats on the blue. Oh, and the horizon is tilted. ;-)

Ah is this the famous street in San Fran? Very nicely captured. What a most fitted site for the challenge :)
04/05/2008 08:34:18 PM
Awesome shot!!!
04/05/2008 06:53:06 PM
This is a very nice photo. The time of day you was a good choice for this. The light trails really set off the curves.
04/04/2008 10:56:41 PM
Very creative and well executed.
04/04/2008 01:33:38 PM
Great take on Lombard Street! Really nice photo.
04/04/2008 08:46:04 AM
Very well done. Nice color, nice curve, use of lighting, well exposed. I like everything about this shot.
04/04/2008 12:01:35 AM
awesome idea. 10
04/03/2008 11:29:15 PM
sweet capture. I really like how the light trails switch from the headlights to the tail lights. Also great lighting on the rest of the frame
04/03/2008 10:49:35 PM
Great job in capturing the colors so vividly and in avoiding any graininess often associated with long exposures. The entire image is sharp and vibrant. I am not to wowed by the rotation chosen for the image however. I think it might have worked better if the buildings were not leaning left which would also show the steepness of Lombard Street.
04/03/2008 11:57:56 AM
After voting, my favorite in the challenge. Good use of theme, composition is tight, interesting to rotate the picture, and perfect shutter speed to get the car front and back.
04/02/2008 10:13:28 PM
Looks like a ribbonie curve to me!
04/02/2008 05:19:22 PM
This is stink'n awesome. The colors are great, I love the wide angle, and the movement here is amazing.

Great job. Keep up the good work.

Very nice! Magnificaent how the red and white lightstripes are flowing into each other. Superb!
04/02/2008 12:57:14 PM
Love it - very cool to have the light trails and to use a fisheye/very wide angle. Nifty shot!

Cool !
03/31/2008 10:54:14 PM
Very aesthetic shot to look at, love the way you controlled the direct lighting. I also like the way the red taillights appear out of nowhere.

03/31/2008 10:22:56 AM
Cool street and curves. I might like it a bit more if the homes were not tilted.
03/31/2008 09:50:56 AM
awesome shot of Lombard - _I've seen a lot of pictures from the most famous street in America - and this is one of the best i've seen. I may have cropped a bit more on the right side

Ooh I like this, 8!
