I figured if I had to make a homemade landscape, I might as well try to make it a rockin' Iceland sort of shot. Of course it looks like a cartoon Iceland but I'll take it!

An arts & crafts challenge is right up my alley. I had a great time poking pin holes in blue posterboard and making the majestic Mulch Mountain range (rear mountains are paper & chalk). The lights are glow bracelets done in the painting-with-light fashion. I had a light on for a couple of seconds behind my posterboard for the stars.

We all know Scalvert will win this challenge but I'm hoping for a decent score with this...but who knows?!

Shot in RAW - RAW conversions. PS3 - hue/sat, selective color (over & over again), neat image, crop, save for web.

YAY!!! A ribbon!!! Thanks for all the comments and votes. I must admit I originally liked the stars - gave it a fun cartoon feel I thought - then the comments started rolling in and I learned quickly to dislike my stars and would have loved a chance to reshoot! Funny how that can happen! Don't worry all you star police...I've learned my lesson!! Only realistic night skies in my fake landscapes from here on out

I like the stars! Creations should have a different "feel" to them! If I had the privilege of directing a play that needed a nighttime set, then yours would be the first number that I would call.

Excellent manipulation of mixed-media, including the pixels used to render a marvelous end-photo! Congratulations on your excellent use of the skills entrusted to you! :)

Aimee!!! Wow! You are a genius. SCalvert look out, you got nothin' on Aimeethetoo! :)

I love this, and considering how many people were whining over the stars, which for a homemade landscape, I think are VERY nice by the way, it speaks volumes for what a beautiful, strong photo this is. CONGRATULATIONS on having the last word with a ribbon :) VERY deserving!!!

Clever creation, but I thought the stars were too fake, being mostly the same size and luminosity. Congratulations on the ribbon. ;-)

Haha... I didn't even enter (nyah!). Very impressive aurora and mountains. The stars, well... not so much. They're too regular and evenly distributed IMO. Who can argue with a 7.18 though? Congrats!

Brilliantly conceived and executed. Beautiful colors. Almost looks real. An eight for you.

The colors really pop in this photograph. The stars are also nicely done, as there are some groupings that could be constilations.

Very clever and a great overall impact. The mountains look good and the starfield and green light really fits together.

04/11/2008 10:20:59 AM
this is nearly perfect. the lights and mountain look really nice, but the stars are out of control. There is sooo many, it almost looks like a dotted background. maybe limiting the dots could help kepp focus on the mountains and light

Very creative take on the challenge; the borealis is spot on, the colors work well, and the starry night lends a perfect background to the landscape. 10

This is well done. Good idea on how you created the aurora borealis. I wonder what the mountains are made out of. They look very real. 8

All the stars! All the stars! We must be in Iceland...Nice work - a good shot, well constructed and the snow is a nice touch...but where is the pretty blonde model coming out of the scene with wind blown hair? LOL

Good work!

Wow this is stunning! Other than the stars (there are a bit too many), it looks real.

04/09/2008 01:44:24 PM
Neat little effect with the light. Trying to figure out the foreground. A little bit of a harsh edge between sky and back "mountain range" but overall nicely done. Good luck in the challenge.

04/09/2008 11:52:34 AM
wow, very dramatic! maybe a few less stars or more obvious constellations so it'd look more realistic, but still a good amount of work went into this. 7

I think a few less white dots/ stars would have helped here. 5

04/09/2008 01:08:32 AM
An awesome concept with the only flaw in the execution being the stars - all too consistently bright and uniformly sized. Still a great idea and good effort should be rewarded with a 7.

04/09/2008 01:07:44 AM
This is good. My only complaint is that you have too many stars. Still the best in the challenge.
