Challenge: The Paranormal (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: UK
Date: Apr 14, 2008
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1sec

Date Uploaded: Apr 14, 2008

Been wanting to try this technique for a while, then this challenge came up and fitted perfectly.

Main light is a single flash with brolly. The ghost is a reflection in a piece of glass placed at 45 degrees to the lens axis (a Pepper's ghost). This allowed the ghost to be isolated from the main flash and hence allow the exposure to be balanced between the two elements of the shot.

Post challenge:

Many thanks to everyone for the kind comments and votes. A new PB, a blue ribbon and it's my birthday this week so what an amazing present!

For those interested in the setup I hope this diagram explains things a bit more clearly

Hi Alex,

I hadn't seen that image before, but I can see why you would be reminded of it.

It looks spectacular - but might have been a bit more difficult to replicate under basic editing ;-)

Thanks Giles

I certainly had all those old movie/theatre illusion methods in my mind. A great source of ideas when trying to do things the old fashioned way (i.e. without Photoshop!)
04/23/2008 05:17:23 AM

That is an amazing job! Congrats on the score and the blue! :)
For those curious on the set up, google "Pepper's ghost", its the name of the technique. Its like the ghost you see at the haunted houses. :)

Amazing technique, hard for me to even figure it out mentally. What I'm having trouble figuring it out, is the 45 degrees to the lens axis. It sure looks like it is practically perpendicular to the lens axis. Congrats!

I understand the pepper's ghost but I would still love to see this set up from a wide angle.

Fantastic! We're sure to see this on the front page (not that I have any paranormal predictive powers). Love the lighting & composition and this illusion is particularly impressive for basic editing. I have a couple of guesses, but I do hope you'll share with us how you achieved this.

04/16/2008 08:06:36 PM
Fabulous .... apart from that wonderful spirit/soul/apparition with it's gorgeous colour, I love that you desaturated the face.
If I HAD to pick on something, I'd say the mouth is a little TOO open.

Can't wait to find out exactly how you did this in basic editing.

Perfect for this challenge. My pick of the bunch. 10.
