Challenge: Motion Blur (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: My office

Aperture: f/8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1 sec.
Galleries: Humorous, Emotive

This one really developed one step at a time. I'd never tried anything with the "blur" effect before.

My first idea needed another person, and I couldn't find anyone, so I ditched that idea.

Just to see how the "blur" would be captured, I stood in one place holding the camera on a tripod over/in front of me and turned. That's when this idea started. I realized I needed something to turn me and the camera steady at the same pace.

Eventuaally ended up in my office chair. Held the camera up with one hand (on the tripod), hit the self timer and then just spun.

I had to try a few different things to get a decent effect. My offic is pretty colorless, so I took my daughter's colorful striped bedding and placed it around me to get some color in the blur.

I had fun learning with this challenge. I don't expect this to place very high, but I'm happy with the photo.

Cool effect, and creative thinking to achieve your mind's eye picture...

I will have to try this technique as well, I am very impressed with the look of this photo, I can really feel the tension on your face...excellent.

Hi Jpochard...

This is indeed an interesting concept :) 1" is a pretty long shutter speed for a shot of this type, but you seem to have pulled it off rather nicely :) I think you have conveyed a feeling of a headache very well. I can feel the world spinning around me and empathize with the pressure from this photo.

As stated in my original comment, I gave this photo a 5. I think it could be improved in several ways. After seeing your method and camera settings, I can probably say that 1" may have been more than necessary. I don't know if you tried 1/4 and 1/2, but it may have been worth while. I don't think the background blur needs to be particularly extreme to convey this feeling that you have presented here. It may have also reduced the amount of post processing required to finish the shot. My Sony 707 made really nice images at ISO 100, but this one seems a bit noisy in the background, and that may have come from the post processing of the levels and color.

This is indeed an excellent idea. I think you should pursue it again and try to perfect it :)

Thanks John...I appreciate the critique quite a bit. I did run this image through Neat Image, but could never really come up with results that I liked. I did receive several comments about the noise, and I think you maybe be right about the shutter speed. Thanks again!

This is awesome, and thanks for giving us the technique how you did it. It is very cleverly done. Hoped it placed higher :-(.

I really thought this entry was going to place much higher.

Amazed this one did not finish higher, it was in my top 5. One of the more original idea's and certainly well executed, with good expression and good colors, a clear message. Could be used in an advertisement for headache pills.

Wonderfully composed image and even your out of focus subject adds to the effect. Very creative and well done!

This is really good! It looks like a migraine. You are only using 91.9KB and you can go as high as 150. I think it might help you to keep clean edges on the diagonals and minimize some of the grain. Still one of only five 10s in this challenge. Nice work.

Looks like the motion blur is done by software, otherwise,ok portrait,3 !

I like it. Don't know how it was done but I like it.

Well done. I love the circular motion blur here and the pained expression. One of my top pics for this challenge.

On a tech note, this photo appears to have a fair amount of noise; neatimage might have helped restore some clarity here.

neat idea. Picture seems grainy and the edges are jagged though

This seems like a photoshop effect rather than a motion blur study.

Good use of motion blur here, really contributes to the image, great expression as well.

I can definitely relate to this shot :) great subject and very well executed. I like the subject being in focus while her surroundings are in a circular blur great shot 10

Very creative. How did you mount your camera to the chair? Did you use a high ISO or did you add noise. I'd like this better with less noise. Colours are nice and vivid. One of my top picks. Good luck. :)

Stone me, can I relate to this! With regards of enhancing your image by use of MB, I must say this is one of the best examples I've seen. Technically, I thought that the image of the model is a bit noisy / pixelated - a gentle wash with NeatIamge type things would have helped a little bit. And a bit of gentle editting (with a clone brush perhaps) around the chair might have helped smooth the border between the fore and background. But it conveys your idea so brilliantly. So, slightly flawed but still genius; 9.

Great idea, shame about the noise levels and blue tint to the skin tones.

Very good, great idea for the challenge, something that we can all relate to. This does look really good! She is perfectly in focus, the background whizzing past looks brilliant! Slight overexposure on her top, but I really like this!

I like it a lot. A few suggestions... It seems a bit noisy to me, perhaps take it through neatimage once and see what that does for it. Also, the expression doesn't quite seem to be what you are trying to get across. I think confused would have made a better title for this one.
