Taken on a recent trip to the Ipswich Railway Workshops (aka the rail museum), as part of the back-stage tour of the steam workshops. This is a working steam engine.

This is an HDR from 3 jpg images - had to double check the rules to make sure this is still ok :). The HDR was all manual, so some painstaking alignment of the images (no tripod) followed by lots of manual layer masking, as well as dodging and burning. Adjustment layers used to desat some parts of the image, and colour adjustments to highlights and shadows. Blurred parts of the background to help bring the train out from the detailed roof.

In the end, I don't know if this is much good. I like the effect of the HDR, and I like the leading lines, but is that enough? Is it overdone? I've only edited this at low resolution, so if I ever want a print, I will have to re-edit it. Probably worth it sometime. I still have my editing steps, but it's going to be a LOT of work.

Cool looking. Almost a surrealistic view. Is this a museum piece, or a running engine?

im a big fan of the HDR edited photos, and i applaud those who know how to do it, im no good at it. but i cant help but feel this photo has too much of a vignette, it does a good job focusing your attention to the well saturated train, but it seems a little overwhelming.
