might you explain how you did this? im curious

Love this! You're just anticipating yolk flying everywhere! Did it take you forever to keep the eggs still, from rolling away, or did you use poster putty? LOL

Terje... Congratulations on your first ribbon, and blue at that. Very creative approach. It was in my personal top three choices for this challenge as was your image "Crash in the night" from the motion blur challenge. Great job with both images.

I guess it would have been too messy to go ahead and shoot the eggs for real.....:)

Congrats on the ribbon! The idea with the cue ball movement was fantastic - the reverse motion actually looks better in the photo. That is, a forward-moving ball with blur would not have been as effective; the (more) solid cue ball at the moment of impact really adds drama to the picture.

To the ones who ask how it was done... it's rather simple really:
I glued a small blue thread to the cue ball, and for the first 0,5seconds the white ball was right infront of the eggs, then Marianne helped me pull the egg towards my cue. A total exposure for about 2 seconds. This was our 5th shot, and no eggs was harmed in this production. :-)

Thanks again and good luck!

It would probably be a LOT more fun to actually shoot the eggs!

LOL. Now I see why I got a stray comment from you on my old ribbon winning pool photo. People seem to really like pool on this site! Anyway, just so you know, playing pool with eggs is a violation of the rules too. :) Congrats on the ribbon and a great photo. I really like your "The Jump Shot" photo too by the way. I suppose that's the legal way of doing it huh?

Very nice, except the marking on the eggs really detracts from the effect.

i dont buy this shot. interesting idea, but i wonder how it was captured.the motion blur doesnt look real. if you did a long exposure, it seems unlikely that the shot ended EXACTLY before it hit the eggs. if it did, then congrats on a great shot. otherwise, unbelievable.

Cool photo. Strangely, the 8 ball is what looks out of place, go figure. I don't like the little red chalk on the table and the guideline for the rack on the felt (but I suppose there wasn't much you could do about that (maybe use the other end of the table?) The extra orange light on the eggs would work better if it was on all the eggs instead of just a few.
I hope those eggs were hard-boiled or you had a mess on your hands after this shot!

Not sure if it's subconscious, but I feel an urge to give this one an 8.. Must resist.. Can't..

Very creative and well done. Should be a ribbon contender. Did you make the eight on the "break"? :)

Nice composition! I would like to know how many eggs you used! Hopefully you boiled them because that would have been quite a mess!!!! The lighting and color look strong as well. One of my favorites. 10

beautiful shot. Love the motion blur. Maybe could have touched up the reflection on the 8 ball but other than that I love it

A dramatic effect with the motion blur. But i want to se the picture just a second later...

I certainly hope they were hard boiled -- I bet it would make quite a mess otherwise.

i am curious about the shot which followed :)
if it's for real , then... it's quite smart idea
good composition
but why is it "out of place"?

This one is the winner. Plain and simple. I will have to say that this is one of the weakest challenges overall that I have seen in quite some time, but it was refreshing to see a very creative photo like this come out of it. You obviously put a lot of thought into the execution and lighting of this one. The light reflecting on the foreground of the eggs is an excellent touch, and you carried out the motion very, very well -- especially considering that the pool player had to have been extremely still to pull off what I'm assuming was a long exposure. This is one of the only ones I felt inspired to comment on... so I might as well go on and on, eh? :) Allow me to be the first to congratulate you on your ribbon -- I'm sure it's on the way! - 10

Great timing! The blur and lighting are very good. Are those real eggs - what happened to the table?

Excellent! But why are all the eggs labeled?

Haven't I seen this pool table in the ribbons before? Another fine shot ( I think it's another ) Solid everything ( color, focus on fore and backround, composition, blur and stop motion, ect.) with one criticism; the date stamp on the eggs are horrid. If you chose not to hide them, then use them and line them all up or something, but the random bits of pink writting are distacting and annoying. Top ten but could have been higher.

Brilliant idea! Excellent composition!.. perfect choice of shutter speed.. how many times did you do this to it right? :P DOF is excellent. My only gripe? That i didn't come up with an idea this good! Good luck! 10

Very technically well done; nice attractive blue color and low angle. This image does kind of make me go: "I don't get it," though - even though those eggs are out of place, the image doesn't do anything for me. So it lacks some power in its content, unlike in its technical merit.

Very well done photograph - the ball movement and facelessness of the model make this a great picture! - 9

The only 'flaw' I see is the pink lettering. What's that all about? Why did you choose to show that on some and hide it on others? I'm sure I'm just missing something...

Who volunteered their pool table?!

I like the composition and the blue felt/white eggs looks good. Could have turned the 8-ball slightly to catch the 8, which is a little obscured. Otherwise, good, um, shot!

pretty decent concept, technically quite nice. I'm very curious how you got the motion blur without smashing the eggs. The use-by-dates are pretty distracting for me.

great picture. I wonder if it would have been more humorous with eggs colored like the actual pool balls?

Reflection on the 8 is way too harsh and distracting.

03/31/2004 11:32:25 AM
Well, set up I like it a lot I would have loved to see the cue ball in reality go the way it is portrayed captured at the instant of impact with the eggs.
However who can blame you for not wanting that mess on your pool table :-).
Anyhow I think you will get in top 5 in this challenge and are among my top 3.
Good luck

neat pic. would like it better if the printing on the eggs was not visible. i think it would be better shot woth ONE egg and all balls instead.

VERY COOL!!! I am just going to take a stab at how you did this (I could be wrong), but did you happen to pull the cue ball back to get the blurring effect without having to ruin your pool table. Very cool though!
