The Image: At the Zoo in the Orangutan Sanctuary. These guys tend to come to the glass to pose with their sad eyes. There were a bunch of reflections on the glass from all the children watching, but this was one of the better of about 100 shots. She just looked at me and posed. At one stage I showed her the image on the display and she looked at it!

The Edit: Levels, Smart Sharpen, Contrast, B and W conversion with a tint, more levels adjustment and curves. Cloned out little specks of dust on the glass, dodge and burn. Not in that order as I work intuitively.

The Prediction: I think this might bomb...5.8? I think people won't see the story...

The Story:

It was a murky, humid morning and the smells of the cook fires from the village left an intoxicating smell in the air. It was arousing my hunger as I sat on my favourite branch overlooking the rooftops.

There was a strange sound in the village that day. Unusual murmers from strangers I had never seen. Most of us were panicky and on edge. The sound of vehicles and doors closing, people speaking, metal sounds and rattling were making us all nervous.

It was now mid afternoon and the tension rose as the sun torched its way through the rainforest. I could hear some rustling and signaled to the others to look out. We remained sleepy but cautious.

Bang! Out of nowhere I heard an explosion and then it began. Bo was trapped in a netting of some kind that was shot up from a gun. He was screaming at the top of his lungs! The whole canopy became a flurry of leaves and branches and screams I will never forget. Martha dropped her baby to the ground and they got it. She was beside herself.

Desperately I started to move towards Bo when Bang... Bang...Bang, Bang...Bang! Suddenly I was in a net myself, trapped and falling towards the ground I scraped my hand along the sharp edges of the tree.

My arms were trapped. Men were screaming. It was all over and before I knew it I was out cold...

You know they are thinking beings, and you know they all have a story to tell.

I loved your little story, in all it's sadness it was so real I just had to stop and think.

I think we all need to stop and think a little more often.

a lovely, quiet, yet not at all subtle image. the tones, the deep melancholy, all work so well. a true portrait or the animal, and of yearning.
