Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Soft Focus IV (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
Location: Inniswoods Metro Park
Date: May 7, 2008
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/320
Date Uploaded: May 7, 2008

The kids and I took a ride to Inniswoods park after this challenge came up. Tulips were blooming, the sky was a bit overcast and Rowan was in the mood to pose for me. My ABC shot was from the same morning. This bench sits in the middle of a small field surrounded by trees which gave great light. I placed her on the bench and she just did her thing.

I really wish this challenge was advanced editing (the DPC print version is advanced edit). The base image was pretty darned sharp, but the faded gaussian blur really did the trick to make this fit the challenge well (Thats waht it was Tech - gaussian blur at 6.0 then faded to 35%).

With the delayed rollover my score moved up over 7 again. Hoping rollover will come soon and it will stand a 7. A couple of other high scores popped up in the threads last minute so I don't think I stand a chance at ribboning, but having this image is worth more than any ribbon. This will be printed out as a 16x20 (at least) on a stretched canvas for our home.

Post Challenge - I am so pleased to ribbon with another shot of my kids. I know some are sick of seeing them but I just can't help it. I do try to present them in different fashions and compositions. Thank you all for the votes and comments.

Congrats on the 3rd place here !

I'm gonna' be the odd one out here and say that this image really hurts my eyes looking at it.
I know the punch was what you were intending on doing (I know your PP too well to know it wasn't an oops) but oh man this is a bit over the top. For grins, I took it into PS and did Image, Levels, Options (I set my defaults to enhanced per channel contrast, clips set to 0.5% shadow & 0.5% Highlights) and hit OK. That took the overall greens down enough and upped the black levels doing nothing more than that. Then in Hue/Saturation Red channel, shifted the Hue to +3%, Saturation to +3% and the Lightness to +12%. Still retains the glow, adds a bit of depth, pops the trees a bit better and eases the over-saturated greens a bit.

Take no offense to my 0.02 cents on this, as you knew exactly what you wanted, and seems the voters agreed. Glad you please yourself first on this and will be adorning the walls of your home with it.

I wish I would pay more attn to my spelling and wouldn't have had to edit this - was spelling only.

So very sweet... I, for one, am not sick of seeing you use you gorgeous kids as models. At the end of the day, your clever work is what counts. The reward is always well deserved, congratulations!

I knew I saw her on a bench! This is fantastic, as is the other shot. The serenity of the image translates well.

BTW, I love her hair! Reminds me of my daughters.

Once you were complaining not getting any yellow ribbon, now the flow cannot stop.
Not that you cannot get the blue's and Red's LOL.

Timmy, this is beautiful. I use my kids all the time too. Only if we lived closer to switch the kids up a bit. I am always looking for cute adorable models. Congrats on the yellow.

So sweet. I love how she's all dressed up in that dainty dress and then is not wearing any shoes. The soft focus adds a victorian feel to the picture. Congrats on the yellow!

My top3 fave. Good luck! :)
A wonderful angelic shot. What a sweatie pie. Only nitpick is the bright highlights of the skirt but it's basic editing, so I see how it can be a toughy to apply whole shot contrast adjustments. Any tips you might have on the PP or how you achieved the softness would be an appreciated read. Thanks m8.

I'd have to say, you pretty much nailed this shot. Everything about her says soft, right down to her precious, pointed toes.

Cute baby, nice dress & location. But unfortunately the over saturation of green color is really not working. Slightly looks tilted towards right,a tighter cropping from top may add to composition.

To sum up my impression in three words....

1) wow (This one is for the composition)
2) Wow (This one is for the perfect use of soft focus)
3) WOW (This one is for the amazing color, depth of field, lighting, and overall splendidness of the photograph)

I expect to see this on the front page next Wednesday. And in case you didn't figure it out.... 10!

Those toes are just too adorable! This looks like such a perfect little girl dreaming moment, and the bit of glow from her dress really makes the mood.

OK Tim and Aimee...I have been a big fan of your beautiful girl. She is a gorgeous child! (Takes after Aimee of course...) Now, not sure whose this is, but I guarentee, if this doesn't ribbon, something is wrong and unfair in dpc world...I love the way her little feet are dangling together, love the Velvia look in the colour...perfect for the challenge 10

lovely soft focus the colour of the grass is a little too vibrant and dress highlights a little blown but once again a very competent image.

Ah, the lovely Rowan. Look how cute her feet are lined up perfect! What a little sweetheart. Composition is very nice....but...it's a wee over-saturated for my taste. It's just SO green. Now this may be exactly how it looked straight out of the camera, but for me, a gentler color palate would have suited this nicely. That said, it's another cute shot for your growing collection.
