Challenge: ABC...LMN...XYZ (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D300
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: Brighton Pier, Melbourne Australia
Date: May 11, 2008
Aperture: F14
ISO: 200
Shutter: 30 seconds

Date Uploaded: May 11, 2008

THE IMAGE:

The Place is Brighton, and it was actually dusk not dawn...I took license to call it a cove, but this is art right?

Took this on a Sunday evening when there were people around. Don't like being out in the dark around the sea at night any more! Used a tripod, went for a small aperture and a long exposure (30 Seconds). Nice that it was rather still and the yachts were frozen for me.

THE EDIT:

Levels, Colour balance adjustment layer, noise reduction adjustment layer, no sharpening (although there was a little in noise ninja), adjusted levels and did a little dodging and burning. After all that I decided to go for a duotone. I like the border, though I know some dpc people will not.

I had about 8-10 editing attempts to really massage the best out of this image. I was tossing up whether to do colour or duotone and settled for the duo which is nice and punchy. I will post the outakes after the challenge.

THE PREDICTION:

I think this will be a low 6 as there will be lots of clever entries and there is nothing too dramatic here. 6.2???

POST CHALLENGE:
Wow! I seem to be the king of yellow ribbons! Thanks everyone. Nice to scrape in. Thank you!!!

This image started life doing it tough and crawled back from mid 6’s to over 7. In the last half hour, moved from 7.16XX to under 7.1, which makes me think that some people might lower the votes at the top in order to gain a little advantage and win. Call me suspicious, but I am about this issue as it seems to happen quite often.
Thanks for all the votes everyone.

Here are a couple of Outtakes:

This is a colour version.

And this one is another shot from the same place that I was considering:

GREAT Shot..

Just one thought... I am sure you had put this border... but may be you can try putting a simpler border (1 pix white + 3 pix black) uniformly across all sides... it will look even better (jut my thought... i am not an expert... but still thought of sharing as i love this photo so much)

Congratulation on the ribbon Enzo. This beautiful photo deserved no less. So, is it too big a call to say you've got your groove/mojo back?

Love ALL your duotones, I prefer this one over the colour. If we do GTG in Melbourne later this year I hope you will give a class on how you process these so well...congrats!

Dude - This is such a beautiful image. [I actually commented on this immediately, but the feedback seems to have been lost, so I'm trying to recreate my emotions.]

The blues and the tonal range are amazing. Plus the fact that you are one of the DPCers I most admire and respect - so it's a great honor to be included in the ribbon arena with you. I still have so much to learn and you have so much to teach. Thanks for hanging with the likes of me. :-)

Nice image and lighting. Great colors. Border is okay, not so sure with the thick top and bottom, but an otherwise terrific image. I'm sure this will be in the top 3.

THIS is a very nice image- I love how the boats are in their own little spot of light, and the shadows 'frame' them, the glassy reflection is lovely as well; and overal the blue hue gives it a night-time feel for me that stops me in my tracks and makes me take a nice virtual breath of 'cool fresh air' :) I had this at a 9 and now bumped it up to a 10 with a second look... the lines and shapes are just -great- ! nicely done :)

I think I know who this is so I don't want to criticize the master, but it seems like the resolution is a bit off here, the boats do not look very sharp to me. I won't take off from my vote, still a great shot with excellent post-processing, the choice of blue works very well.
