Challenge: Movie Titles II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM
Location: Peter's Canyon, OC, California
Date: May 18, 2008
Aperture: 11
ISO: 400
Shutter: 320
Galleries: Abstract, Black and White
Date Uploaded: May 20, 2008

Started out as a pre-dawn walk/hike through Peter's Canyon in Orange County, California. The image is a crop of dead trees rising out of the water with their reflection. The crop was rotated 90 degrees to give the appearance of flying birds. It has a very creepy 3D feel. I particularly like the blurry (reflected) half of each "bird".
Remaining PP: adjustment layers for black & white conversion, then curves for strong contrast, then curves again for negative conversion, then border, resize, USM, save for web.

Taken at 200mm.

I can only hope this will crack the 5.0 barrier. I'd like to leave the <5 images behind! I'll be satisfied if one person comments on the 3D effect.

POST: Thanks for the great comments! The image of the birds jumped out at me when I first looked at this image while hiking as I happened to be thinking of the challenge at that time. I really love the creepy 3D visual. Here is the original, unprocessed except for RAW conversion.

This one is very cool. I did not vote in this challenge so I did not see it. But it is very OOBIE! You had asked what that was - it's an award for Out of the Box thinking. Definitely would have been a great candidate.

It's such a shame that this image didn't score higher - I would have bet money for top 10. However, originality, creativity and instinct are rarely appreciated here.

This is a good "see" to think about the rotation, and it made a very unusual abstract shot. Good job.

I absolutely loved this during voting and gave it high marks. It's not surprising that it didn't score higher considering its outstanding artistic quality. So I'm very happy to see that you received awards of peer appreciation, which are worth a lot, in my opinion.

ooo, this is so cool. the birds created from submerged sticks. flight from death. the tones are disturbing, the effect nightmarish; this is not an easy image at all. well done indeed.

good eye! don't sweat the score, you have a great histogram. when you get people loving it and hating it, you've made something provocative!

??? I know the movie but what is this picture?? Is it on its side a pic of dead trees coming out of water with their reflections??

Such a great idea :o) It really looks like birds. The black and white tones make it very Alfred-Hitchcock-ie!

Inverted and rotated clockwise? They do kind of look like birds but not just any birds, deranged ones much like Alfred's... and with that my YankO Yellow. Good luck!

Clever rotation, but doesn't really fit the mood.

Interesting idea. A negative of branches reflected in water, rotated 90 degrees, yes? They do look something like birds, though very abstract.
