I definitely wanted to enter this challenge because, about 10 minutes drive away from where we live, there’s a lovely big pond with rowing boats you can rent to paddle around in. The only problem was that I wanted a shot of one or a couple of rowing boats without any people in them. It took me 5 visits to the pond to get this (hopefully) peaceful looking image.
A big problem was that we've had a sunny but very windy week and by the time I’d focussed and screwed on the IR filter the boats were gently moving around again. Arrgghh.
I hate that it’s not as sharp as I would have liked it to be.
It didn’t help that the people in the other rowing boats were paddling all over the pond and causing "my" boats to move even more (so much for peaceful ;-) If you check the image you can see the ripples at the upper right from the next rowing boat coming my way. The only thing I was thankful for was the fact that there were these two unused boats tied up away from the edge of the lake.
My husband loves the image but thinks it doesn’t stand a chance. He feels it’s not dpc “hit you in the eye” enough. He may be right... worry, worry...

One thing was good though. At long last I tried IR out with my D50.

Post challenge:
OMG!! What a week this has been. There are so many beautiful images in this challenge, I’m totally humbled that my IR photo ribboned. THANK YOU for the great score and a huge thanks for the amazing amount of comments.

I’d like to dedicate my image to JawnyRico who died a couple of days ago at the age of 27. I’m deeply saddened. Sean, may you rest in a peaceful place.

I feel I have to leave a comment because I can't tell you how many times I have gone back to look at this image. Out of the tens of thousands of photographs I look at, I might actually look at a half dozen more than once and even less than that I see more than twice.

It's wonderful. Truly.

THis is so awesome, I don't know why anyone would given you ones or twos, I would've given you 10 absolutely. THis should've won.

A big guy in a wetsuit wades into the lake every morning to get the boats then he takes them back at night. The water is pretty deep and goes up to his chest, so it's an interesting sight to see ;-)

Keep 'em coming Irene.

This is my favorite one. Is this IR? I love the slick glass appearance of the water. Nice balance with the two boats. I like the cool color tone too.

I'm not a big fan of IR, but this one could change my mind, it's absolutely superb and refined, including the subtle and delightful motion blur of the boats.

I think this will place highly, but I do see some jaggies on the top edges of the boats. Try a different resizing method that can give a smoother looking result.

Very romantic. Nicely observed and well composed. The desat greatly adds to the atmosphere.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
05/30/2008 05:06:35 PM
What I think could have been a perfect photo has been, to me anyway, over processed. It's mostly the jagginess on the far side of the boats.

Very cool IR shot. A bit unlucky that boats seem a little soft or some movement during long exposure - 8
  Photographer found comment helpful.
05/29/2008 04:30:45 PM
Just an incredible image. I am sure this is a long exposure to get the water so calm, but the longer exposure has blurred the edges of the boat a little. The only thing I could wish for is a little bit more sharpness in the boats, but who am I to complain....wish I had taken it.

Lovely butterfly effect: but sadly, so over-sharpened that all I'm seeing is jagged lines on the edges of the boats... :-(
