Natural light through window with reflectors. Shot at 125 mm

No cropping
Cloned out some dust
Really no edits to speak of
Convert to grayscale & duotones

Ran out of time to do a lot more. The background needed some blurring out but couldn't make photoshop work for me.

Great lighting, tones. Crips focus and clean processing. Great pose too. My pick of the challenge. A nine for you.

Meets well the challenge with very simple means.
Moreover an excellent portrait in all respects: cropping, attitude, light...

Very nice tones and contrasts. Strong composition with the subject filling the frame and wonderfully lighted so that we can appreciate the details of this young cowboy (no deep shadows fall on the young man's face to obscure his features). Love the hand on the brim for it seems like he has turned his attention to us and is about to take off his hat and say "Howdy Mam'" or "Howdy partner". Very strong personable shot for your subject immediately greets us as we look at the photo. This one lassos an 8.

Nice close-up, effective use of duotone. The handsome young lad really looks like an idealized young cowboy, not just because of the hat but also the clear eyes and open expression.

Just a little hot on the brim of the hat in an otherwise well lit and attractive image

Very nice photo, but doesn't feel cowboyish to me. The hat alone doesn't do it. Nice highlights in the eyes.

Makes me smile every time I see this handsome gentleman tipping his hat at me. :) Good job.

The curve of the brim is very elegant and the pose makes this a nice photo. More sepia than b/w. 9

Nice portrait. Having a hard time making this fit with the challenge theme. Yes, this young lad is a "cowboy" by wearing a hat, but it feels quite staged, like something you'd put on (a prop) in a studio for a portrait setting. Quality is certainly there, although I'm leaning more toward the images that have more of an authentic feel to them. All JMO of course. Good luck in the challenge.
