This photo was taken late in the evening at the entrance to Devil's Bowel Caverns in Death Valley National Park.

A full moon had just risen when I noticed this rarely photographed Southwestern Rock Chameleon "mooning" itself on the desert floor.

I was only able to get off this one shot before it scampered up an escarpment into the shadows.

You are correct, that is exactly the illusion I (or perhaps, better, the chameleon) was trying to create, a Southwestern Rock Chameleon photo that "appears" to be a Desert Bighorn Sheep, resting upside down.

That's why these little critters are so elusive and hard to photograph - they can look like just about anything. I've actually got 12 or 13 of them and my portfolio and you'd never know it. ;)

A "wow" shot, I don't see how the toning could be any better. I'd've voted it one of my rare 10s.

Extraordinary shot -- under-appreciated by voters, I think. Makes me think of the sci-fi movie "Pitch Black."

Oh, man, this is superb! First glance suggests some cool eroded sandstone formations in the southwest, and then it hits you. Technical excellence here, too, with wonderful composition, exposure, sharpness and depth. 10
