This is Harry (Harold if he's been naughty!), a friend of my dog Pippa. As you can see, he's a beautiful West Highland White Terrier, and a very photogenic little fella!!!

I wanted to approach a portrait of Harry in a different way than the norm. I'm a big fan of Frans Lanting, and it was whilst reading his book, Eye to Eye, that I got inspiration to do this portrait.

"The mythical understanding that underneath their separate identities all animals are one has been a guiding principle in my photographic work. I aim to get past the feathers, fur, and scales. I like to get under the skin. It doesn't matter whether I am focusing on a three-ton elephant or a tiny tree frog. I want to get close and face them, eye to eye" - Frans Lanting.

This is my interpretation along those lines; my aim being to portray character and individuality, and to engender the viewer into a sense of unity with this wonderful animal.

One of my challenge favorites, and far underrated in my opinion.

I'd given you an 8, I think the lighting and composition are spot on. As are the Focus and DOF. Deserved better IMHO, well done

One of my faves of the challenge. I just love this portrait. So unique for a pet photo. I love how it is giving you such a serious gaze. Very nice!

I really like the lighting on this, my dog would never sit still long enough to get a shot like this. 7

wow, that is such a different dog shot then i've ever seen, you did a great job with the lighting on this one, and the eye is right in the right spot, brings your focus right on the dog. nice job, and good luck to you!
