This was a rushed job - don't have much hope for it....

Post challenge:
I love glass, so when I read that this speed challenge was on Light Bulbs I really wanted to get something done for it.
I decided to re-do something I’d done a couple of years ago. Breaking open the light bulb with a hammer (being VERY careful not to damage the filament) and then photographing the moment when the filament burns for the last time and dies in a puff of smoke. On my pbase site I have a gallery with four images showing this and it took 30 light bulbs to get these four.
This time I only had one light bulb to use (didn’t want to start taking bulbs out of lamps) so there wasn’t much of a chance that I’d get the shot I wanted.
I set everything up, tested the lighting and took a couple of test shots. Everything was fine. Then I hit the bulb with the hammer and (of course) it broke and (of course) I’d bashed the hammer through the filament! Damn!
This so sickened me, I decided to give up. I packed everything away again and was just about to throw the light bulb in the rubbish bin when I noticed that it looked good despite being broken. I set everything up again and took a shot of the broken bulb (lit from underneath and with my yellow piece of board as a background). I really liked the way it turned out but was totally amazed to see that it was at +8 at 4 votes. It rapidly went down to 7.2ish and that’s where it’s stayed all week.
Thanks so much for the score, great comments and the ribbon.

Hello again Rembrandt, I had heard of your talent for taking portraits of people; I think you don't do too bad in the 'drops of water' and 'broken light bulbs' departments either. Congatulations on this ribbon and the hundreds yet to come.

I think they should start making it official that from now on, only 2 ribbons are awarded and the third one automatically goes to you :) CONGRATULATIONS once again, Irene! Exquisite work as always!

Irene,Irene,Irene.. wow you seem to be everywhere. You got an amazing talent ! It's wonderful to see your work landing up so frequently with a ribbon and you are having a 'scalvertish' run for the ribbons. Keep up the tempo.

Oh no, Jon. Definitely not. I still find it an exquisite pleasure to be in the top 10 of any challenge, especially with all the talent to be found here. I'm a nervous wreck all week when I have a good score and press the update button a million times. Nothing's changed in that respect. I love this site and the people on it.

"Don't worry about the "1" giving person. I put a curse on him and he's now the frog sitting on Lydias light-bulb. He'll never bother us again"

Darn! And I had him in my clutches and let him go... *sigh*

LOL!

Hey, I celebrate you Irene. You should do a book.

Two things:

1. You got a 1...who is the person that gave this a 1????
2. How come you use a humble D50 when you have a D2X? Just asking...

Your biggest fan,

Enzo

Hi Enzo, to answer your two questions:
1. Don't worry about the "1" giving person. I put a curse on him and he's now the frog sitting on Lydias LydiaToo light-bulb. He'll never bother us again ;-D
2. The D50 is my absolute favourite camera. It sounds daft, I know (and I love the D2X) but everytime I pick up a camera, it's nearly always the D50. I'm hoping I'll grow out of it ;-D

This is a good week for Irene! :) I'm thrilled for you. Your images this week are excellent, as usual.
I think I like this broken bulb better than your 'last burn' one. Congrats on the blue, Irene!

Nice lighting and composition; like the shapes in the jagged edges and cracks, with enough removed to get a nice view of the bulb's innards.
