My camera battery was low and I had taken a few photos and almost gave up as we started off home
Then I turned around and saw this balloon just about to block out the sun so I took this on suppresed flash The lake was so calm and such a beautiful evening I only had one shot at this and I am quite pleased with the colour and result

Beautiful ... your timing was perfect ... and the golden colors are just out of this world. It could have done well for the serependity challenge too :-). Your notes behind the photograph are also illuminating. New Zealand is such a beautiful country - did postgraduate work in Massey (and have visited Hamilton) and can't wait to get back ... to photograph again - as there was no consumer digital cameras way back then.

Hi to you all

Just to say a Big 'Thank you' to all the kind people and nice words regarding my silhouette image. I am really proud of it and it has definately given me a buzz winning a blue ribbon.
I strive for perfection and I think this was one of those rare moments I was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time and to be able to use my camera in the right way. The weather was just perfect.
I love my little camera and it has given me heaps of pleasure I really enjoy belonging to D P C and I have found really nice people who write to me regulary through this site.
I am sure my photography has improved and I find myself looking at the world in a very different way. I think sometimes my family think I have lost the plot when we are out for walks and I drift off to photograph a flower or whatever but I do enjoy it very much. Some of the challenges I have had to really struggle with but apart from one that I down loaded wrong onto the site I think I am definately a much improved
photographer.
So Thank you once again for the vote and for making my day a happy one
I had my brother in law from the U K with me when I took the silhouette image and he was going back to the U K so I quickly got Imageland in Hamilton to run off a copy for him to take home. the manager at Imageland liked it so much that he wanted to print it off on canvas ( it was the first he has done on his new machine) I think the size is 24inchs x 18 inchs (not sure I think thats right) and he has framed it and put it on show It looks fantastic on canvas, he is not selling it and it has my (c) and name on it proudly displayed in the shop window.
I'll get off my soap box now LOL!
Thanks again
Regards
Sally

Beautiful picture. The reflection in the water is icing on the cake, it would have been stunning photographed over land - over water with the reflection is perfect. 10

I've not seen them all yet, but i know this is going to be a winner, definitly top 3, probably numero uno. However, with it being an advanced editting challenge, I might have been slightly tempted to get rid of the lines hanging from the nearest balloon ; just makes it a little bit untidy. overall - fabulous! 10.

04/20/2004 12:07:22 AM
This is just simply peaceful to look at. I can almost imagine myself sitting on a dock on the lake and being witness to something like this. It feels 'silent'. The color of the light also feels very warm. I might even have my fishing pole with me when I see this. I like this composition with the sun behind the baloon. That contributes nicely to the silhouette. This is a great example of being ready to go and in the right place at the right time.

Compositionally, I think you have a couple options here that could create an even stronger image. This one feels somewhat 'static' because the horizon is splitting near the center of the frame, and the balloons with their reflections are creating a centered vertical, but slightly off balance. I think a simple tighter crop here would work nicely. Make it into a tall narrow compostion just large enough to encompass the balloons with their reflections....

Excellent work :)

I like your image as a silhouette... it makes for a nice one. I'm not fond of center subject compositions (my personal preference issue).

Stong image. Nice colors. Try cropping the top so that the upper balloon is just at the top (but not touching the edge.)

Beautiful! Love the inclusion of two balloons rather than one - really makes it more striking. In terms of composition, given that there isn't really much more sky than there is water I'd crop the sky down and opt for a centred horizon. Ideally I'd suggest having a touch more sky than you have (to create a one third/ two thirds balance) and I'd also rotate to the right a touch so that the balloons are a touch further left within the frame.
