I am a med student. This past week I've been in Peru shadowing doctors in several different areas of the profession. This is a surgery that took place while I was in the OR. I also saw a gall bladder removed and a vaginal reconstruction surgery ('to make it bonito for her wedding night'). Not too sure how well this one will go over, but this has been my life for the past week while I've been here. Been an amazing experience and seen a ton of different diseases that would make infectious disease doctors in America jealous.

After challenge- Mother and son were fine. The rest of the group with us showed up shortly after I took this and we had to go back to the hotel. It was totally different there in Peru than here in America. We were told by doctors, take a picture of this patient, take one of that. There are no HIPAA laws like here. The next day I saw a surgery of a vaginal reconstruction and just stood off to the side cause I thought "I don't feel comfortable taking photos of this one." The next thing I know, the doctor is sticking me 'front and center' and telling me that he wanted pictures of every step for his website... now that was a different surgery.

I have a couple other pictures in my portfolio now of while I was in Peru, I just need to go edit the details and make some names for some of the pictures.

nice finish for a c-section! ...wondered how you got the cam in there and then so close, not exactly "sterile technique" ('less you used zoom? :)
Try & enjoy these experiences, the time will go by very quickly. Pictures are great...remember the patients...they are your real teachers.

Best~
Anne

Enjoy the time, it's fun. I still would like to know if you got permission from the patient, although I suppose the father was present. Did she know it was going to be posted on the internet? I ask because I was expecting to see it in your details. If not, I challenge you to tell her.

Kudos for the shock value. You could have taken the less brave approach of a line-up of surgical instruments. I think a brighter red and whiter gloves would give this more punch.

I'm sure some are going to be grossed out, but this is fascinating to me. I do wonder - did you get your patient's permission to show this? And are mother and child ok?
