Meet Vicki, a very big and normally very black Percfheron mare, but her coat is bleached out by the sun as she lives outside 24/7. The title reference is to the KT Tunstall song, Big Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.

I love this. She is a gorgeous mare and the strong light has brought out details that would normally disappear on a black horse. I love the shadow of her eyelashes and her beautifully lit up eye.

Hello from the Critique Club,

I do not read the other comments or see the score before I write my critique.

Aw...lovely horsey. :) Obviously shot for the horse challenge, so easily fits the challenge.

I love how close up you got and the turn of the horse's head. However, the whole photo has a very washed out feel to it for me because of the bright sun. This was advanced editing and I think you could have played more with your options (or in-camera when taking the shot) for bringing out the greens in the background and reducing the glare of the sun on the horse's face. To me, that is its biggest drawback.

It also appears to have been over sharpened. I know that also sometimes happens with the resizing, but the overall effect is similar.

I would have scored this horsey portrait a mid-5 in the challenge.

I hope this helps!

Judy

A lovely addition to your top row. I love the texture in this shot. It seems like I can put my hands on her muzzle and feel the soft skin.

what Cristy (ristyz) said. :-) Hard to get those dark horses well exposed without blowing the background highlights, you did pretty well!

Yeah, that song always makes me think of a friend of mine who has a Fresian... But back to the photo - the light on this couldn't be any better. Composition is very nice, although I wish I could see a bit more neck.

more room for his ears and nose! that would have also given you more chest and neck showing so it didn't have the 'floating heaad' syndrome. Nice exposure and sharpness and nice fo have his ears up and not focused exactly on you.
