Challenge: Light Source (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: My dining room, basildon, essex.
Date: Oct 16, 2002
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 160
Shutter: 1/1.6
Galleries: Emotive, Still Life
Date Uploaded: Oct 16, 2002

I have always loved the effect of volumetric lighting so I thought it would be good to try and capture it on film. For the fog I used a smoke machine and completely filled my dining room with smoke. Then using a household torch I placed it behind the bonsai and took pictures from various angles until I had a good selection to play around with..

This shot is amazing and I see why it won. Have I not read your notes on this I would not have quessed that this shot was staged, although it made me wander to see so much sun in this type of darkness. Incredible.

Oh yeah, that was intentional :-)

Wow this is a stunning shot - what with various last minute crises last week I didnt have the chance to even look through the entries let alone vote - but I know this would have been a 10 from me.
The shafts of light come across as good dreams breaking through the darkness don't they?

Doug.. No, I thinks it a chinese elm, but not certain... Whatever it is its not evergreen as shortly after that photo was taken it started to lose its leaves..

I am understandably very happy with the placing, thanks to all who voted and those who took the time to comment.. The lightsource was just a small, 1inch diameter, flashlight (torch to us Brits) placed behind.. I took plenty of shots then went through a lengthy selection process until I picked and cropped this pic. Strangely enough this wasn't my first idea, I was initially going to use a bottle of low calorie salad cream and use the same effect, it would of probably been called LITE-SAUCE.. (get it??) Then I remember the bonsai and thought it would make cast better shadows in the smoke..
(some of you have asked me WHY Ihave a smoke machine in the house, basically I play in a function band and we use it as part of our lighting system)..

Kudos to the "Lady in Red" photo which I though would absolutely walk away with the blue ribbon this week.. I would of been more than happy to play second fiddle to that picture.. (in fact all of the top 20 photos are exceptional)..

I don't like the vertical light on the right. I can see something there and it doesn't match the other rays. Without that, this would be an awesome shot. -7

Looks very staged, but attempts to pass as a real phenomenon. This seems like a contradiction to me, so it doesn't play well as well as it would if it were an actual captured moment.

WOW!!! I like the bonsai, I love the rays of light... for me its a wonderful, peaceful picture!
If I'd look very close, there's something a bit distracting at right hand side behind the tree, can't say what it is, but it doesn't really mind, it's a great photo at all! 10 and gratulations, KAOS!
