Challenge: Shallow DOF IV (Basic Editing)
Collection: Challenges 2008
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Date: Sep 9, 2008
Aperture: f/3.5
ISO: 125
Shutter: 1/500
Date Uploaded: Sep 9, 2008

Not quite what I was after, but kinda close. The blurred section is actually in front of the focused bit, but I do think it's hard to tell. At any rate, I wanted both fore and aft bokeh of sorts.

Processing includes a B&W layer slightly reduced in opacity. Shot while playing in my mom's back yard on a foggy morning.

Excellent Deb. Love the confirming strip of DOF at the base.

i changed my mind. this is my favorite picture of yours! the olive tones in this are so great! it sings of cold, winter withering. as if you are zooming in focusing to capture this leafs last breath.

Shallow indeed. The colortone is perfect and that curl is definitely a great find. I see it as inviting the viewers into the picture to come and see more. Pretty cool.

Niiiiice! I love this look of brown drying leaves. It reminds me of autumn, which always makes me happy.

Perhaps my challenge favorite. I would have put this on the front page for sure. Lovely use of duotone (if that's the correct term).

I find your notes interesting, as I was not sure about it when voting, and the blurred part being in the foreground, partially blocking the rest was kind of odd. I waffled between 5-7 and then decided that something that made me look that carefully deserved the 7. Didn't leave a comment, as I was speed-voting at the last minute and could not nail down what I liked/disliked about it at the time. I think what I really like is the the curled leaves, and the way the light is playing on it. The tilted background adds some interest. The blurred foreground leaves blocking the main subject is the only real issue with this one, but the rest of the image is strong and carries it through. I'm really impressed by a lot of your recent B&W work.

the background is ghostlike in its feel while the curl provides a wonderful focus point for us

I would have wanted to see the thing in front in focus because it dominates the frame, but Kudos for trying something different!
