Yes, this was taken in a Wildlife refuge. The hawk was outside and the lighting is the sun. It was taken against a dark background.

I knew that many would vote it down because it's lacking the "natural environment" part. First I wanted to keep it for the FS but since I already have something completly different for the FS I decided to stick with it.

Also, I had another picture that was taken the day after that would have fit good but I still wanted to see how the Hawk Portrait would do.

Here's the outtake:

This is so beautiful and dramatic. I really think it should have scored higher. I'm boggled that you got 45 5's. But hey - it's all in the eye of the beholder, I suppose. I certainly love it.

I think the dark shadow takes up way too much of the frame and cuts off the bird's face so that it appears incomplete. Detail in the bird is nice but would like to see more of the hawk and less of the shadow. 6

I like the effect you've gone for here - I can't decide if it works - but I do like the idea.

Very striking lighting and astounding detail. Almost film noir hawk. I can't look away from that mesmerizing eye! I'll be interested to see your notes on this one; I get these guys in my yard periodically and have gotten a few close shots, but none as intriguing as this.

I really like this photo. I wonder if a square crop and a b/w conversion would make it even more engaging.

Beautiful. I think I would have taken some off the right side of the image... and would have liked to have more room on the left... but it's not a huge deal since the eye and feathers are just so beautiful.

An unusual portrait. I've seen this lighting used commonly for people but not for birds. Works well.
