lensless shot, used a pinhole

A fortuitous set of Elmo zipper pulls in the bargain bin of a party supply store serves as catalyst for this rather bizarre entry. Had to use a utility knife to saw off the little plastic loops on the sides of their heads to make them presentable. They stand about 3" tall.

Many, many test shots, first to establish composition (because sighting through the viewfinder when you are using a pinhole is practically impossible), then after that to get exposure just right. Then I played with levels in Photoshop to leave you all with the impression that I didn't get the exposure right. ;)

Got the front-most Elmo in position first, then played with position and leveling of the other ones. Elmos 2 and 3 are raised about an inch above Elmo 1; Elmo 4 at the back is yet another inch higher than the others. Elmo 1 is about 1" from the lens cap/pinhole; the distance between Elmo 1 and Elmo 4 is 12".

Pinhole images are softer – less sharp – than pictures made with a lens. The images have nearly infinite depth of field.

Sorry about my comment about focus. If I had known you were doing something as tricky as you were I wouldn't have made it. It is a very clever achievement.

Holy cow - how did you "focus" your pinhole so well? I'm well and truly impressed!! And I really like the whole red Elmo thing to begin with. Nice work!

Way to go Karen!

I thought I'd collected a few strange props over the years but these beat all of them. Nice to read the setup - lots of work involved and well worth it!

How many Elmos were tickled in the making of this shot? I'm calling the ASPCM

what's the point of shooting with a pinhole when your picutres turn out almost dead sharp?! lol

Congratulations on breaking through the 5.0 barrier and capturing the highest pinhole shot ever entered on DPC. Great use of the infinite DOF.

If one of them had been absolutely sharply focused this would have been better.
