[Nov. 20th, 2008 05:23:27 PM]

When I read the challenge description my first thought was "the woodies kidnapped him", thinking how that might look it just took a minute or two to come up with Gulliver's Travels.

I originally shot this in the grass in my backyard but the grass was too tall and obscured the woodies so I moved everything to the front yard and lay down in the dirt and took the photo. The strobes attracted a couple of neighbors who I don't think ever really understood what I was doing.

That is my arm in the photo, so that left only one are free to position the twine and woodies which was a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. Someone suggested that the woodies could be placed a little more dramatically but I was just happy they were standing up.

I only had a couple of hours Monday night before rollover to complete this photo and it almost didn't happen. I left work early to purchase the woodies from a local art supply store. Traffic was horrible and I arrived at the store 5 minutes after they had closed. The lights were off and a girl was locking the front door. I had to talk her into unlocking the door and selling me the woodies. It didn't help that she had never heard them called woodies and wasn't to clear on what I was talking about. Anyway thank you Sarah at University Art for re-opening the store for me.

This isn't a very well done photo technically, but I really like the story it tells.

Love the story - I could have sworn that was Don's arm, and I was wondering (correctly, but with your arm) how the photographer had managed this. And it seems that was almost the least of it.

A delightful shot - perfect for the challenge - and an even better story to go with it! Congrats on the huge payoff (ribbon!) as well! (And I know what you mean that you were just glad the woodies were standing - took mine out to play in the vineyard and could not get him to stay standing on the ground at all!)

It may not be great technically, but it's perfect nonetheless. Congrats!

I owe all my success to this wonderful site. Back when I wrote the "my photography sucks" thread, it really did suck, but people here were so helpful and gave me some great comments on how to improve. So I just applied myself to the task of getting better and it's has paid off. But I never would have gotten there without the wonderful feedback and support from the people here on DPC. Thanks to you all.

Hahaha, very nice. The lighting feels very fairy-tale to me.
11/25/2008 11:54:55 AM
very imaginative!

Different idea. I think the direct light is a little strong, as it overexposed areas ont he woodies and the arm, but lighting this was always going to be a bit difficult.
11/23/2008 02:07:29 PM
LOL! Brilliant!
11/23/2008 01:28:49 PM
LOL! So cleverly done! Perfect for the challenge.

I really like your idea...although..I am very tired of the "woodies"
11/22/2008 06:14:42 AM
Like this one. good action on the woodies
11/21/2008 09:54:24 PM
lol funny cause I had a similar idea in mind, but this works very well! Love the woodies poses and the rope/stakes made of twine and toothpicks. Lighting very good, too easy to get glare in shots like this but you did very well 8

Nice set up and take on the challenge, reminds me of Army of darkness. Good work.

11/20/2008 08:57:23 PM
yap, this one I really like...
11/20/2008 05:39:52 PM
This was so my idea for a shot! Nicely done.
11/20/2008 10:47:15 AM
Wonderful all the way! 10.

(Just a small suggestion, the woodies could have been arranged more dramatically. But I can't subtract anything for that).
11/19/2008 02:11:04 PM
Brilliant!!!!! So creative.
11/19/2008 08:53:38 AM
LOL! I got this even before I read the title :-) Maybe a tad overexposed but very funny.
11/19/2008 04:21:32 AM
Too funny!
11/19/2008 04:12:32 AM
One of my absolute favs (if not THE fav!)
11/19/2008 02:38:36 AM
LOL - Awesome idea!
11/19/2008 12:29:06 AM
Fantastic story . Composition could be better (maybe, I don't know, I'm referring to the arm placement)
