Initially I tried to something very ambitious but given the editing rules, I couldn't make it happen with my very limited skills.

Instead I got my wife to pose for this and I really like the shot. Given the exposure time was 1.6 seconds, I think she has done a great job at keeping it sharp.

Not too much in the way of editing:

Some slight contrast manipulation
Neat Image
Smart Sharpen
Some work on bringing back her eye colour

Lots of nice comments during the challenge - thanks!

Lots of compliments on the hair. This was luck really - Nic is lying supine on cushions with her head on a light box (she is holding the lower knife out of shot). The hair just fell that way and it looked OK in the viewfinder. The camera is on a tripod above her, pointing vertically down. This was the first shot of just four I took.

November 21st 2009

A year on and I have better editing skills and software now, so I've had a quick go at re-editing my first ribbon.

I suppose the exposure kind of defined itself - I had left the ISO on 100 to minimise noise, I set the camera to +1.0ev to accommodate for the backlight and then set an aperture of f/11 to get enough DOF to ensure everything was sharp. At those settings a 1.6 sec exposure was what was needed for the exposure to be OK :-)

Thanks for the congrats.

Many thanks for the comments. Enzo is right, the true star is of course Nic; her facial expression was bang on and I had very little left to do.

Thanks for all the kind words and the congratulations offered for the ribbon.

Hilarious concept, well-executed! Very good choice to give her an anxious look instead of smiling at the camera, and her bit lip is just perfect. Congrats!

I hadn't meant to vote on the challenge, but while I was scrolling through I noticed it said I had voted one image a 1. Well I checked and it was this image, not sure how it happened, but as this was one of my fav in the challenge, I've changed it to an eight. It still won't be counted, but at least it's better for your score now. lol

Nice one! One of the best in the challenge. I'm wondering what technique you used to get the silverware to do that. Or maybe she's really magnetic!
