Meet Black and White Kitties. White Kitty is one of my charges. She is completely white with a black tail - very unusual. She was abandoned by her original owners and sat in front of their apartment door for about a year. My next door neighbor and I started feeding her and two other cats - all starving and almost feral.

White Kitty lost an eye - I don't want to know how. She was so skittish that we could not catch her to take her to the vet. Eventually it healed up and she's as fine as you can be with one eye.

Within a week - about 5 months ago - White Kitty suddenly did an about face and became a little sticktight with me. She's totally my cat now and has a darling personality.

Outside my door, on the deck, I have a big wooden tool box - for decoration - and she has taken to sitting in it.

This black cat is a bit of a menace, and he picks fights with our deck cats - here you see one such incident. I took this through the window by my front door.

Converted to BW with Silver Efex, applied a touch of Redfield Fractalius. I lightened the black cat's face and eyes a bit.

The fractalius filter almost makes everything in the shot - deck, plant, cats - look organic and of a piece with each other. Very striking.

i'm curious about the details in white kitty's fur? did you put it there are are those shadows? we have a kitty who adopted us. I'm hoping the crazy menacers don't show up at our door lol.

Great story, I love you for rescuing White Kitty! This is a cool image; of course the postures of the cats is one I'm very accustomed to, having so many "saved" cats in my care, all of which do NOT get along. I love the texture on White Kitty's fur, neat! Finally, this looks great in b&w, and a perfect composition.

The fractalius isn't apparent until you look at the cat in the box; good, subtle use of it. What really works for me is the composition and the high contrast B&W.

Wonderful composition! Those ears look flattened enough to spell trouble on the way, too. I like the lighting, and the texture unifying the image.

Great image, so full of personalities, and I love the processing, and the areas of contrast compliment each other beautifully.

SO COOOL! First off though, it wouldn't be right to have a side challenge without some cats, and these are full of spunk and mischief :)

Awwwww, she picked you.

Way cool real-cat-life image. The b/w was a purrfect fit too. (yeah, I'm a cat freak)

Perfectly contrasting backgrounds for these two kitties. It heightens the drama in this photo even more. I also like how the texture in White kitty's fur matches the texture in the deck. Well captured.

the more I look at this image the more things I find interesting about it ... texture everywhere from the grain on the deck, to the pattern in white kitty's fur and then the leaves ... I also love how the deck is overexposed from where the black kitty is standing to the top of the image ... gives it that high contrasty feel that I just adore ... this is really well done, and I love the story behind it also ...

I love this - not only is there a great story going on here, but marvelous textures and tones. The fur of White Kitty looks almost to echo the pattern in the leaves (probably from the fractalius bit) and the look on the Black Kitty is definitely one of trouble-making. Lovely shot, nifty processing. And I'm glad White Kitty adopted you. :-)
