I’ve been a complete wreck this week because the score was on a roller-coaster. Up to well over 7 then back down to nearly 6.7. Suddenly reached 6.9 again.. Back down to 6.8. It rose to 6.9 before I went to bed last night ;-)
Thanks SO MUCH for the great comments and, of course, the score and ribbon!

I started off with an onion and a piece of onion skin. I photographed these two items for hours on end, two nights in a row. On the third evening (do most of my stuff after I get home from work) I cut the onion I half, cut three rings from the other half and spent two! hours trying to get something decent. Without success! I was just about to give up when I slapped the three onion rings onto the onion instead of propping them against it. When I saw how much better it looked I decided to go with it.
I very seldom end up with the photo I see in my minds eye. Usually I end up really p’ed off with the whole thing and, just before I throw my props into the bin, I get a better idea. Apparently I need to get really fed up and extremely frustrated before inspiration strikes! ;-)

A few mentioned the dust spot. I wasn’t sure if it was dust on the glass or sensor dust and decided to keep on the safe side and leave it.

Thanks again, everyone.

Hi Irene,
I'm new here and this is my first comment. The image is brilliant with clever play with light and shadow. The clarity and sharpness are pristine as expected from this favorite optics of mine. I like the way you have completely silenced the background on the top frame and yet keeping the flawless reflection at the bottom. Top drawer image and thanks so much for sharing.
Regards.

Congratulations on the well deserved yellow ribbon, and contrary to the nay-sayers, not a water drop in sight!

I think the lighting and depth of field are fantastic. The image illustrates the challenge quite well.

If I were to suggest anything, I think that I might have liked the bottom cropped a little lower. To catch all the reflection of the top twist of the onion.

Does anyone smell and droplet into a glass of wine... (with some paper in the background!!!) then somewhere in there what you want for Christmas??? Hehe!

Great job on this shot, keep it up!

Congratulations Irene, this is perfect, love the colour in the background and the reflection. I wouldn't have thought of this but a great fit to the challenge masterfully shot as usual. Congratulations.

Love this picture, the light, and composition are great, the background works very well. It's a shame there is a dust spot on the left bottom corner, that is permitted to clone out under the basic editing rules.

I would have given it a 10 if not for the dirt/dust spot near the bottom left. As it is, I'll go with a 9. Don't cry about it...just kidding. Get it? Onions - make you cry. Ok, nevermind. Good luck to ya!

This is just a magnificent picture. The reflection is incredible. An onion never looked this beautiful. Rather Jupiter-esque... But the rings are not so much "after" as just a different presentation. Maybe if they had been deep-fried?
