Thank you all for the nice comments. It is great to get a ribbon, but I was most happy that Tyler (the kick-butt kid) and his parents liked the picture. Tyler recently graduated to a purple belt, he is a great model and worked very hard during the shoot, he deserves all the credit for this picture.

I am still trying to figure out how to shoot an image that does not deserve scores of 1, 2 or 3, a few pointers on this subject would be appreciated.

Light was provided by 2 alienbees, one to each side of the subject. The key light to the left of the camera with a 'beauty dish' attached, the second to the right of the camera with a 'brolly box'. Background is underexposed by 1.5 ev. 1/250 sec was enough to stop the action thanks to the low level of ambient light and the use of strobes.

"I am still trying to figure out how to shoot an image that does not deserve scores of 1, 2 or 3, a few pointers on this subject would be appreciated. "

A remarkable image simply means people will remark. It would follow logic that not all remarks would be positive. Or all marks would be favorable.

There are many pages of unremarkable photos behind you in this challenge. Lost in anonymity. Being remarkable is a better thing.

This is one of the best shots I have seen on this site, well done!

Excellent execution. I wouldn’t have thought that a shutter speed of 1/250 would stop the movement. By far my favourite.

I think I would have scored it higher if the background would have tied in with the challenge a bit better. It feels to me that Tyler is a bit disconnected from the background. Just my thoughts.

Great capture. As for the low votes, there will always be people who think that their take on a challenge is the only one. So if you don't meet their criteria you lose. I am amazed if I don't get 1's 2's and 3's. You didn't deserve anything less than a 5 for this awesome picture.

If those voters don't leave comments explaining why they voted low, all you can do is chalk it up to "you can't please everyone."

Congrats on your ribbon, it's a terrific shot.

A Nikon D200, that's all it takes :-) I bet there were some nice outtakes, too. Has a decent composition and very sharp along with suspended-action. How many shots and what lighting setup?

Cute kid, good lighting, beautiful background. Only problem is it may be a little too beautiful--the sunburst is kinda distracting me from the real subject here.

Good idea but just looks a little weird to me. Looks like he is about 15 feet off the ground. Very nice shot either way.

the subject is well isolated in the sky, the fill flash is evidently necessary but the final effect seems a bit not real.

Despite myself (I don't prefer the cliche of "jumping in the air in front of a sunset or other dramatic landscape"), I have to give this a 10. It's because this is so absolutely engaging, really... it feels like I could hop through the computer monitor and be with the subject right now.

Is this real? If so, this kid can really jump! I would have preferred if the lighter area at the bottom of the frame was cropped out and, as already mentioned, I am having trouble working out whether this background is real or not...
