Oh wow, I can’t believe it! I guess maybe I hoped to ribbon here some day, but didn’t expect I would do so in a Free Study at this point. Thank you all for your votes and especially the wonderful comments I really appreciate. Ironically, this image was taken during my first outing with a brand new camera I was trying to get the hang of- I guess it is a keeper ;-)
As many who commented were aware; this image was captured at Kerry Park which is in my home city of Seattle, Washington. That’s Mount Rainier that you see in the background which is actually a dormant volcano. I have lived a couple of blocks from this park for about a year now and haven’t shot there as much as you might think, but I am always surprised when I do go to this popular shooting spot how many photographers start packing up their gear when the light is only just starting to turn to magic. I’m lucky to have basically the same view (though more obstructed) from the front window of my apartment and am getting pretty good at predicting which days will be photogenic though I frustratingly often don’t have the time to shoot. I’m glad I did this particular day!
I regrettably haven’t been good about recording the steps I take in processing my entries during my short time here. I do know I didn’t do a whole lot to this one, but as I remember it was something like this; cool the WB a little and adjust saturation and fiddle with color channels in RAW (used Lightroom “camera standard“ profile), curves, levels, cloned out an airplane, tiny bit of burning and dodging, slight negative exposure offset, resize, smart sharpen, and SFW.

Many thanks all! I guess it is all downhill from here...
-Brent

*Thanks very much all for your continued comments since the challenge closed, I really appreciate them! I'm flattered that there have been some requests for prints of this image. I have now submitted a borderless copy of it to DPCPrints and it will be available for purchase soon pending approval.

Amazing!!!! I'm new and am just trying to find my way around and this caught my eye in a major way; definitely deserving of such a special award; dynamic use of color and lighting in this perfectly composed image; congratulations!! Nina

You capture Beautiful Seattle so well. This is the only city in the US that makes me just stop and enjoy the view, and I'm more a country/nature woman. I lived there for 6 wonderful years and still love the sight of her. Thank you for sharing!

Stunning image. Technicals are spot on, but catching the right moment here with the light and the mountain being visable took some planning too. During my visit out there, I never once saw Mt. Rainier because of cloud cover :( Thanks for showing me what I missed!

As someone who lives in the Seattle area I have to say- this is one of the best (if not the best due to color) pictures of the city I have aver seen. It is nearly impossible to get a clear shot of the city and mountain at the same time, and this picture highlights them both perfectly. You should seriously sell this to some magazines- I'd love to buy a print of it myself. Let me know if you're selling!

Fabulous!

There is no such thing as a perfect shot but if there were this would be it!

I love the sky and Mt Ranier in the background and the lighting and the composition. Brilliant

A well deserved ribbon.

It looks like you even captured some lenticular cloud formations near the mountain. Well done!

I forgot to mention that I really dislike the "sandwich" border. :(

Ohmygoodness! I don't know that I have ever seen a more beautiful photograph. The night time exposure is absolutely perfect -- but the shadowy, snowy Mt. Ranier in the sunset background. What a fine art masterpiece! Congratulations on the blue ribbon -- but seriously -- this should be printed and sold to Seattle lovers for biiiiiiig bucks!

Oh, and thanks for ammunition. I have been foaming at the mouth to upgrade to that 5D Mark II. I will show my husband this photo so he will understand why I need it too :) As IF I could get a shot like this anyway, but at least with that camera I could get closer :)

Congrats on the blue. I love Mt. Rainer in the background. I assume that's Mt. Rainer...although I guess I'm disoriented, I thought it would have been to the left of the Needle...but I only visit Seattle, so I'm all turned around! Great shot.
