This is my first entry. I just got my camera for Christmas -- was using a point-and-shoot previously.

The most difficult part about getting this shot was getting the dreidel to spin correctly! I must have spent hours and hours spinning the dreidel -- not only did I want the direction of the spin to go in a diagonal, but I also needed the dreidel to land on Gimmel, and I needed the dreidel to spin for half the exposure time and stop in time to get a clear shot of the finish. I also needed the dreidel to stay in the window of the camera and not roll off to the side. Luck definitely had to be on my side to get this shot!

Lighting was basic... just overhead lights from my kitchen.

Editing steps were also minimal... I adjusted the levels a bit to de-emphasize the background the dreidel was spinning on and to bring out the stopped image a bit more clearly.

I just entered my first challenge, as well. Not this one, but the Life III challenge. It's a good and bad feeling, isn't it? Glad to get the first one out of the way! I also shoot Olympus. Good to see more people doing the same.

As for the photo, I really liked the idea. Lighting would have really helped this capture a lot. You would be surprised at how far $20 can go at Home depot, which is where my current lighting setup came from. a 300w clamp-on worklight w./ 10" reflector, and a 150w, as well. You can improvise a diffusion device if it's too harsh by lighting through fabric. or bouncing the light off a reflective surface before the subject.

Hope this helps your future entries!

best
Josh

Interesting effect. Not very well exposed. Nice idea.

Cool ghosty effect of the spinning, maybe a bit dark.
