This tree stands near the Desolation Trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The hillside leads up to an old cinder cone several hundred feet tall. This trail leads you from untouched forest through the area devastated when that cinder cone was producing lava.

I knew going into this challenge that the image wouldn't have mass appeal, but I loved it from the minute I saw it in my LCD.

I figured there'd be an audience for it, and I think the comments and comment vote average demonstrated I was right.

Kilauea was erupting when we were there, but within the park, it was simply spewing tons of sulfur dioxide gas into the air. They call the resulting haze "vog," for volcanic fog. There was no lava within the park.

But outside the park was a different story!

Seriously good, Jeffrey, and worthy as an entry in Ansel Adams too, if only it hadn't been taken last June. I really like the composition, and that long languid slope of land. Where was this?

Jeff - I really liked this one (voted it a 9). Good stuff. We head back there this summer (but don't get to the big island).

Brilliantly composed and framed. The duotone adds an ominous, almost otherworldly effect.

I really like the way you brought out the texture of the soil in this mono treatment. The light sepia tone seems appropriate.

I like the element of bleakness here, and while I generally like toning I wonder whether simple monochrome might have added to the harshness in this particular case ?

The shapes in this are great, as is the sepia tone. But the really wide border in white makes it look dim and dingy.
