Challenge: Something New II (Advanced Editing II)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Olympus D-490Z
Location: Oakland, California, USA
Date: May 9, 2004
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/10
Date Uploaded: May 9, 2004

Used a plastic box full of sand to create an artificial beach, plastic monster to play the part of the Loch Ness Monster. Partly submerged a large jar to create a "reverse diving bell" or coffer dam for the camera -- the almonds in the jar help hold the camera steady. Ended up pre-focussing outside the jar, then taking the shot with the timer; small flashlight to add some light since the water wasn't too clear.

Resized, ran some tone curves to try and get some contrast, USM to bring out the upper scales.

As far as I can remember, I have not taken any underwater pictures before.

That's pretty cool. And a cotter dam for the camera! What a brilliant idea.

Your mind does, indeed, work in strange ways. Don't ever change.
I actually gave that image one of your higher scores. A 4!

Very nice score General! It reminds me of a glass of beer with back-wash. :)

2nd worst scoring? You just gave me an idea though. If you enter one that everyone will have to rate 3 or lower, then you can get tons of comments because of the voting rules LOL.
Happy April Fools

Thanks ... it was truly an experiment in trying something new, but just didn't work out that well in the time (and with the equipment) I had available.

I almost titled it "Nessie?" but I decided to not try and be cute and just describe what I did.

And if I need a nice pastel abstract I know just how to do it!

Wow! What a bunch of work you did for this shot. I like the colours.

Certainly meets the challenge, but without an underwater camera and the right light, this doesn't have any focal point, and does not have pleasing aesthetics.

This has the potential to be something very cool, but it has no focus.

Good idea.
Not nearly clear enough.

Great idea but needs to have some detail in focus.

Colors are okay. Because it's all out of focus, I don't know what to look at or look for.

This is just too blurry to make any detail from.

A wee bit out of focus if you ask me :-P

I don't know what did you try to do
it's out of focus
sorry but it's very bad

I apologize, but this photo really is difficult to rate very high, as it is out of focus and I am unable to find a focal point that shows me exactly what I am looking at. I am sure it meets the challenge 100%, but the photo is technically not as sound as many others. I give you kudos for your bravery and confidence!

not sure what I'm looking at here.

This one is way too out of focus, I can not tell what it is. Sorry I've never tried underwater shots myself so I really can't help with how to make them better. Hope you figure it out, sounds like it would be interesting to keep trying.

I don't know if its the focus, to blurry, or just fog on the waterproof camera cover.

Kudos for trying something new. I'm having trouble determining what I'm looking at due to the poor focus.

I gave this a three for major technical problems. I'm not sure if you actually took this under water (with your camera in a plastic bag, maybe?) or just through glass. At any rate, it is really blurry and uninteresting. Three-fourths of the frame are taken up with fuzzy neutral color and absolutely no detail to speak of. The top fourth of the frame has a bit more variation in terms of texture and color but it is still too blurry to be of any real visual interest (beyond trying to figure out what it is.

The colors of this image are superb - nice pastels. But, there's not much else there for me. Feels like the song, "It that all there is, my friend?"

Interesting idea, but it's very difficult to really see anything in this photograph. Too bad this one wasn't in Abstract, it probably would have done very well :)

Sorry I don't really see this as all that interesting.

I hope this was intended to be abtract because the focus is not on and the horizon is tilted.

I don't get it. There's nothing in focus to draw the attention of the viewer.

its just way too blurry

Blurry, abstract, not really engaging. This would look better if it were clear and the top roundish thing weren't cut off at all.

Huh? Not my type of shot, just not pleasing to the eye at all.
