I had this poster up on my wall as a high schooler. I thought it would be fun to try to duplicate. Being a perfectionist I see all the ways in which it isn't perfect, but I think the results are not bad. It took a fair amount of effort. If I could shoot it over, I would lower the point of view by quite a bit. This was shot maybe 30 inches off the ground. I think I'd redo it at like a foot. My little made up box for the martini glass too is terrible. I didn't even notice that you could see the box under the black paper.

Props to my friend Chris who loaned me his house, chair, and lamp and helped with the shot!

The border is on purpose to mimic the way the poster was printed.

POST: Wow! I wasn't expecting blue. I'll try to post a "how was it done" with some outtakes of the props. Thanks for the great comments.

I'm hoping to see the out takes as well.

I think I'm old enough to remember the poster you talk about, and I vaguely thinks it was an ad for a 'speaker'?

Nice photo dude, nice.

I love this photo and would have given it a 10 if I had been voting (great tones and outstanding attention to detail make this stand out for me), although I accept (unlike some others, apparently) that other people may hold a different view from the one that I hold. Maybe I should jump off a cliff for having an opinion.

Looks like it was fun to do. Based on some of the in-challenge comments, I'm betting a few of our younger folks and non-US centric members may never have seen the original - or at least not know it that well. And I wouldn't suggest you try this at 1x. :)

Congrats, Doc. Funny thing is that old poster (and tv commercial) were the first things that came to mind when the challenge was announced, but it never occurred to me to try and recreate it. Well done!

PS: Just do a Google Image search on "Maxell" and you'll see the original poster.

Good job Doc! I remember reading an interview with the photographer that shot the original poster shot where he told how it was done. I think that it was in Popular Photography mag about a year after the photo was first published.
Congrats on still another big "Blue" ribbon!
