I think the color version of this was almost certain do do well. But, as nice as it looks in color, I really like the way the sepia focuses my eye on the details of the tree instead of the glorious colors behind it. I had a couple of minor issues with this, most notably some banding in the sky due to the limited bit depth of JPEG. I might have done better in that regard if I'd had my SLR that morning. Any blurring or noise reduction only made it more pronounced. The banding really isn't too bad however, and may not even be visible on many non-calibrated monitors, so I'm going to fly with it.

This is a reshoot and hopefully an improvement on a pic I took with a Coolpix L6 a couple of years ago. I had some nice clouds the first time.

I pass this spot on the way to work every morning and I get some wonderful sunrise shots from this location, though there is usually not much in the field. Some trees and occasionally a drilling rig.

Pre-challenge notes:
Probably not enough wow factor for a 6, but a mid to high 5 is always good to hope for. No telling around this place however.

Post challenge notes:
Surprised the heck out of me that it stayed well over a 6 the whole time. There were a lot of other great pics in this challenge. I only managed 21st place with a 6.3 average. This one made the 3rd spot on my profile page and pushed the shot of my grandduaghter from "Peekaboo" off of it. I think the sepia was a good choice. Here's the color version for any that are interested.

This is my favorite of this tree's portraits. Perfect in every way

Congratulations on a strong finish :)

I find it interesting that you felt colour was more of a distraction rather than an important visual element to complete a story. I would have likely given you extra points for the colour. The sepia version leaves me a little cold I'm afraid. I literally yawned when I came across this in voting, lol, no offence intended Steve! But particularly as there are no details in the foreground to speak of (deliberate for silhouette?) and the tree appears soft, so no joy there either... I was kinda left shrugging my shoulders and wondering why!

Nice. To my eye, I'd crop more from the right but it's great. 7
