This is an installation at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. It's a dimly-lit room about 20M square. There are a dozen or so illuminated white squares scattered about the floor, each with a chrome drain hole in the centre. Portraits of anonymous people are projected onto the squares from the ceiling. Each portrait slowly appears and comes into focus as you watch, and then gradually distorts and swirls around until it drains away through the hole like bath water. The faces all appear to be different, but if you stand and watch for a few minutes the compulsion to reflect on your own mortality is irresistible. They all become self-portraits, of both artist and viewer.

This was my Best of Show for the challenge and I gave it a nine. Perhaps if you had scattered a few puzzle pieces around it would have had wider appeal... :)

I find the photo compelling, and the description of the installation most intriguing.

that's a puzzle alright. Love the processing.

I really like the composition of this, I just wish I could see it better, it's a little bit too dark for me, especially along the bottom and sides.

Interesting, but too grainy and OOF.

This is groovy; I kind of like the refusal to deal with anything approaching the bright lights here. Much of this challenge features the bleedin' obvious, and this has far greater depth and sincerity.

Oh, I love this one. I've just started looking at this challenge but am so glad to see something this striking & original.

He does seem puzzled. This is supported by his pause, the lighting, the grainy processing, and the missing corner on the left hand picture. A piece of art.
