Absolutely brilliant!
06/25/2004 09:55:26 AM
as a CG artist and amateur in photography I'm totally sick about people who act like timj351 did with this "not-at-all photo"
07/13/2003 02:17:03 PM
This is CG, not a photo, right? No idea how this was not disqualified...
05/03/2003 05:38:31 AM
the white pieces look vectorized..

the edge of the board looks like it has been sharpened too much.

Explanation is here - //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.asp?action=read&FORUM_POST_ID=35493

11/07/2002 03:15:00 PM
Tim, are you going to explain how this was done?
11/07/2002 02:50:00 AM
The shading on the underside of the white King seems to be an inconsistent lighting angle with the shadows on the board. Additionally, the depth of the board (the blue frame), is the exact same number of pixels at the far end of the board as it is at the near end, which would be a strange thing to naturally occur given the perspective. I agree this is probably a photo of a computer generated image being displayed on a screen.
11/06/2002 08:32:00 PM
i believe it is computer generated as well.
11/05/2002 04:36:00 PM
I think it shows that this image was computer generated. Maybe it`s a photo of a computer generated image. Still, the jagged edges show taht it was computer generated...
11/04/2002 11:46:00 AM
Yeah! I absolutely love thei photograph! You did an incredible job. Congratulations!
11/04/2002 11:06:00 AM
Incredible shot, Tim. Congrats!
11/04/2002 09:54:00 AM
Congrats -- well done! My "Surefire Pick of the Week Award" was right on the money (see below)! :)
11/04/2002 02:18:00 AM
Simply ingenious! Congrats!
11/04/2002 01:53:00 AM
My guess, as a frustrated artist ;), is that it's all done with the color shading at the corners; and, that the ivory colored pieces are layed flat under the upper edge of the chess board. Definitely an optical illusion, and very well thought out and photographed. Congratulations on your well deserved win!
11/04/2002 12:33:00 AM
I studied this picture all week trying ti figure how it was done. I eagerly await your "How it was done."
11/04/2002 12:14:00 AM
Awesome job, Tim! Well deserved!
11/04/2002 12:04:00 AM

Great Illusion--well done andrewm
11/01/2002 01:42:00 PM
One of the three best this week. I can't stop looking at it! 10
11/01/2002 01:02:00 PM
im venturing to guess this was done with a combination of a print-out and a real photo. nice effect : ) colors and lighting could have been done a little more exciting, though : ) .. mag99
11/01/2002 12:31:00 PM
Excellent work!
11/01/2002 08:51:00 AM
Disqualify, looks to be digitally altered.
10/31/2002 12:16:00 PM
Great rendition of an Escher dillema.
10/30/2002 05:11:00 PM
How did you do this? Great - I looked, and looked again, and again... didn't get it! Great shot! 10 - KAOS
10/30/2002 03:45:00 PM
Very well done. One of the few I am scoring high this week. By the way, I think the centered composition works well. lhall
10/30/2002 03:12:00 PM
Very nicely done. Can't wait to see how you did it! karmat
10/30/2002 07:58:00 AM
This stumps me.
10/30/2002 12:51:00 AM
Wow!! One of my top ten.
10/29/2002 11:32:00 PM
Wow! Great shot - I can't want to find out how you did it! shedonist 9
10/29/2002 11:21:00 PM
The illusion is a 100 out of 10 and the photo quality is a 90 out of 100. This has got to be the number one illusion of the week or year. I LOVE IT. Sorry I can't give it more than a 10.
10/29/2002 07:17:00 PM
Nice illusion. Focus and lighting are great. 9 waltoml.
10/29/2002 06:09:00 PM
Appears to be a little over-sharpened as indicated by the highlighted edge between the board & the background or between the light & dark squares * also, the white "pieces" don't have the same reflected light as the REAL black pieces * however, you at least thought about putting in a little effort this week (7)
10/29/2002 01:00:00 PM
Spectacular photo! - there's a version og this illusion at
//www.optillusions.com/32.html
which I doubt could have been achieved without breaking dpc rules ... I look forward to hearing how you created this shot.
10/29/2002 11:35:00 AM
Very cool. Great job with the challenge! 10 Kaz
10/29/2002 04:44:00 AM
neat trick...
10/29/2002 04:35:00 AM
Excellent optical illusion, but the end effect simply looks too artifical for my liking. seasick - 6.
10/29/2002 03:26:00 AM
Very nice effect.
10/28/2002 11:22:00 PM
At first one thinks there is a mirror and now I see you cut the board on a diagonal and then glued the yellow pieces on top or bottom that is if you flipped the pic upside down ...hold on I'm not sure if this would work....except for two seperate pictures which would explain the lighter blue trim on the yellow side....anyways great work I give you 10
10/28/2002 10:43:00 PM
Good job! 8
10/28/2002 09:48:00 PM
Fantastic!
10/28/2002 08:13:00 PM
Perfect! This is surely the winner!! Good Luck!
10/28/2002 07:52:00 PM
Excellent! Set up is great and the lighting and exposure are also very good but what I like the most is the composition. Have to give you a 10
10/28/2002 07:19:00 PM
Marvelous illusion. 8 JEM
10/28/2002 07:08:00 PM
this gives me a headache, and my stomach hurt. I gotta give it a 10
10/28/2002 06:01:00 PM
Alright. A real illusion. Excellent work. 10
10/28/2002 06:01:00 PM
very cool trick!
10/28/2002 05:02:00 PM
I think I know how you did it: the white pieces are laying flat under the board.
Great shot!
10/28/2002 04:20:00 PM
HowEVER.....it's super-can't wait to learn how you did this. Fine work. Bravo!!! 9 Justine.
10/28/2002 04:00:00 PM
Excellent illusion. Well done. 10 Jak
10/28/2002 03:11:00 PM
TOTALLY AWESOME!! 10--shutterfly
10/28/2002 02:11:00 PM
Very cool shot! (I had to have it explained to me, but I liked even before I "got it". Good everything! 10 Swash
10/28/2002 01:26:00 PM
Highly spectacular and my favourite so far. But I can't believe, that there will be a more impressive illusion under the submissions I've not voted on so far. Brilliant idea and well done shot too! - nds
10/28/2002 12:55:00 PM
now that's an illusion, best one I've seen so far.
Those chess pieces look familiar, they've seen alot of your camera lately, huh?
10/28/2002 12:19:00 PM
I am looking for a flaw in this one to show how you did this.... I can't find it. Too good. On a technical aspect, I would have liked to see all four corners of the chessboard. Also, all the story of the picture is off... no chess game could end up like this (knights facing the wrong way, everyone in the corner). Just a thought - great picture (8) MarkRob
10/28/2002 11:40:00 AM
Excellent. Very well done. Good Illusion too, which has been hard to come by this challenge and probably why the entries are down. Nice lighting and framing. - Good job - Inspzil
10/28/2002 11:39:00 AM
Clever idea and a fantastic illusion. 10
10/28/2002 11:19:00 AM
A nice effect. One of the better ones this week 8/10.
10/28/2002 11:11:00 AM
Very good illusion. Please explain this later.
10/28/2002 11:05:00 AM
Woo hoo! My first and only 10 of the week! Very impressive. This one gets my new "Alan's Surefire Pick of the Week Award," something which I created last week (and correctly predicted as the winner! Let's see if I can go 2/2 with this pick!) - 10 alansfreed
10/28/2002 10:51:00 AM
great illusion 9 .marbo
10/28/2002 10:43:00 AM
beautifully executed...good strong lines and graphics here...composition is excellent! (10) ~mcmurma
10/28/2002 08:29:00 AM
Very clever. I look forward to seeing how it was done.
10/28/2002 08:19:00 AM
I'd like to know how this one was done after the challenge has finished. Are the pieces on the bottom, just flat cut-outs?
10/28/2002 06:20:00 AM
It would have been interesting if the chess board was slightly transparent. But I like the obvious deception here.
10/28/2002 05:04:00 AM
Great trick, well done. My pick of the week.
10/28/2002 01:23:00 AM
Superb ! = 10 Shiiizzzam
10/28/2002 01:13:00 AM
