I'm just coming back to this my review, and bumping you to an 8. I love the tonalities here, and the subtle partially-desaturated look you've achieved. If I have a quibble, it's that he's just a little too central in the frame, to my eye at least. I think the dynamics would be dramatically improved if he were as little as one body-width closer to the edge. Of course, that would create issues with the upright on the back wall, and you *have* worked very succesfully to isolate him from the clutter, so it's not a major nit for me, but...

Lots of personality in this, it's like his surroundings are an extension of himself.

A bit brown and underexposed? 5.

I like the PP highlighting the subject.

This looks familiar - maybe I've seen it in one of my Industrial Door Contractors coffee table books. ;-)

Really a fantastic job shooting and processing this top notch environmental portrait. Good luck.

Excellent job with this enivornmental portait. I do like the centered position of him in the frame, and the lighting and PP look very good. I'd only suggest something to make him stand out from the background a little bit more. A bit of the dodging tool applied to the subject to make him pop more could go a long way. You have a making of a a really good shot. (no vote)

Great environmental portrait. Like the subtleness of the HDR effect.

I like the processing you have done with this photograph. Makes the vote feel as if they are in the same building. Nice lighting, detail, and focus. Bump-up the score.

Looks like a dirty job! Makes for a good photo, though. I think the only thing I don't like here is the guy in the background; He's just a bit distracting.

This is a really fine shot. Keeping so much of the surrounding environment really added rather than detracted from the portrait.

Voted earlier coming back to leave comments. Wow! The processing really makes this composition pop! The boost in contrasts and tones really calls attention to all the objects in the workshop, but where I our eye instantly travels is to the Machinist. He is in the center of the composition and he dominates it as the main focus. It also helps that the colors of his jeans and shirt are about the only other color differing from the grays, rusts, and blacks. The steel and denim blues stand out from all the other hues. I really like this portrait that places him in his work environment. Great work 8.

This would benefit from a crop or change in composition to get the subject off the center. Good post processing - love the subdued colors. (5)

Reminds me a lot of bear's fantastic example of environmental portraiture and excellent processing on Jim Talbot, Master Bookbinder. (I think that's what it was called).

Very nice tones and good treatment of the shadow/light areas.

Environmental portraits are among some of my favorites, especially when you can get inside of the everyday, blue-collar worker's life. This one is one of my favorites from the challenge thus far. Nice capture of a very interesting machinist.

I really like this image, there is plenty to like!! but just one small thing I would have done differently is to have the subject a little less central, just my personal taste. Still a great image and high score from me.

Great shot. IMO, this would have been stronger if you cropped off the left almost 1/2 of the shot. Your "punch" is the man wiping his hands with the background of the building wall and shop tools. Love the subtle colors & editing. On the other hand, my focus is so caught by the fore man that I don't even "see" the left side unless I deliberately focus there.
03/11/2009 09:29:15 PM

This has a magazine spread feel to it. The post processing is interestingbut really flattens the image I think.

Nice, unique capture. I love the "mechanical" feel of the pp, just maybe have him pop a little more, lighting-wise.
