Robber Fly (Family: Asilidae)about robber flies

when i saw this challenge announced i thought 'no way' ...
then jason smardaz asked if i was entering it ..
i thought of little mr robberfly in sepia & looked in my original photographs to see if i had any other photograph of him with his eyes in focus .. i only got 9 shots of him before he flew off ..
so thankyou jason .. my lifetime average has had a huge boost because i entered this challenge ..

THANKYOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR VOTES AND COMMENTS ..
and coz i got a comment asking 'why in b&w .. arent these guys full of colour?' .. this is the original .. considering the background and the fact that his colouring isnt that nice you can see its a no brainer .. :)

Roz! I am totally out of superlatives to make an impact on what I think of your macro work. It is beyond words. What an honor to finish in 12th place in a challenge with 1,113 submissions. You are in a league all by yourself. Although, I have been quite amazed by Greg's work too lately :) The 2 of you are most definitely the finest macro photographers on the planet!

Congratulations my friend! You are freaking AMAZING!

Roz, I think about the days where you used to wonder about how to do better here and since then, you've taken off like a rocket and have figured it all out. I hate bugs but this is an amazing piece. I love how it really is sitting there and posing for you. The light and clarity on the eyes is amazing, and this looks perfect in black and white. Congrats on an amazing finish in this challenge!

this is obviously NOT a hidden gem, it's right out there for everyone and their uncle to see...in fact I have a very similar shot in my favorites, you are obviously trying to copy the style of Roz, but you will never be good enough. Maybe try water drops. Or move to Iceland. /10

If I had to guess I would throw out the name Roz and I would feel confident that I would be right. There are few on this site that can match you in insect photography but that being said I doubt that they could capture the soul the way you do. Some people are unparalleled in landscape, others people, but you have mastered the hardest of them all, the insect.

You truly inspire me Roz and you always have.

You ROCK

All the best to you and yours.

MAX!

I'm hoping to leave comments on as many photo's in this challenge as possible... out of (currently) 1124 images, I gave 31 of them a 9. Your image was one of those 31.

There are quite a few bug macros in this challenge but this is simply awesome, and a world apart from the others. The definition and clarity is superb, and the monochromatic treatment only serves to make the form and composition even more eye-grabbing. I don't like to guess at the photographer identity generally, but am I on safe ground thinking this is from our Robber Fly expert "GregoryB"?

Good luck for a strong finish in this challenge.

It one EVER wondered what the details of a robber fly looks like, this is an excellent photo to demonstrate it! As much as I do not like flies, I can fully appreciate all the details seen on this capture. Wow, just look at the individual hairs on it's legs and face - who knew it was 'bearded'?:-) And the details in the compound eyes - you can literally count the dots in its eyes! Fabulous macro capture - hats off to you for patience to get this shot. Flying insects rarely stay fixed for long so you probably had seconds to get the focus right.
