This is a double exposure "overlay" - set my camera to Bulb and held the shutter open for as long as I needed to get each of the 2 elements into position, holding a black card in front of the lens between exposing each element. I exposed the letter first for maybe about 1 second, then exposed the picture for 5 seconds. Total time the shutter was open was a little over 30 seconds. It took about ten tries of different exposures for each element, and lining the picture up just so, such that certain faces weren't obscured by the writing.

An honest to goodness photo of my ancestors, dated 1905. The letter is from 1875, that I picked up at an antiques market, from a family unknown to me. In the letter, an aunt details how everyone at home is sick and asks if the woman to whom the letter is addressed will come to help care for everyone, as she had promised. Beyond that letter though, the details of what happened to all of the family that had fallen ill is lost to time.

Very creative - both, your technique, and the pose the photographer used for your ancestor's photo.

What a cool idea and even better that the photo is that old.

Very clever, young lady! And I love that you have a picture of your kinfolk from that era - that's very cool.

Fabulous although I'm sure your methods were called into question. Glad it wasn't DQed.

I wonder what it is about old photos of people that makes you want to know their stories. Very nostalgic.
