I really like this shot, great idea! With a little faster shutter speed so the hammer would have some definition, but still be blurry, this would have been a 9 or 10.

Voted earlier coming back to leave comments. I really like how you bring the focus on the work and the action of creating the horseshoe to the spotlight. All else is presented in very dynamic B&W tones so that the main subject/ centered object of the photo can really pop off the page with those red-orange tones. The introduction of that specific color shows us the heat needed to shape it. Red hot, don't touch! I also like that the one hand hammering the horseshoe on the anvil is caught with motion. That adds to the sense of watching it in the here and now rather than it static with no motion. Great details here too.

A great image. I love the sel desat of the red hot shoe. The anvil in focus with the hammer in motion blur is just great! Bumping this to a 10.

Sorry but selective coloring never works for me unless there is a great motive. This is a potentially good, natural shot made strange by the colored part against the grey tones. Sepia monochrome could have been a 6 or 7 but this is a 5 for being visually contradictory.
03/15/2009 12:03:34 PM
excellent use of selective coloring. really give the viewer a "feel" for the image.

Great action capture. Typically, I am not a fan of selective desat, though I can see why you used it here.

First selective desaturation I ever saw that I really liked. But it's not really the selective desat that makes it; it's the selective focus. 8.

That's a great shot which is enhanced by the desat, lovely focus and DOG and the blur of the hammer's action, though I think a slightly faster shutter speed would have helped define the hammer more.

And that's what we call "effective selective desaturation".

And there's lots for the eye to see that isn't in the horseshoe, but the glow is what gives us reason to linger.
